Lesson 9 Ratios Rates and Percents Rate Problem
Lesson 9 Ratios, Rates and Percents Rate Problem Solving
Warm-Up Find each unit rate. 1. 2. 3.
Rate Problem Solving Target: Solve problems using equivalent rates and unit rates.
Vocabulary Equivalent Fractions: Two or more fractions that represent the same number.
Solving Problems Involving Rates Using Equivalent Fractions 1. Write two rates with an equals sign (=) between them. 2. Identify what you need to multiply the numerator or denominator of the complete rate by to write an equivalent fraction on the other side of the equals sign. Using Unit Rates 1. Find the unit rate for the known rate. 2. Multiply the unit rate by the known quantity.
Example 1 a Complete the equivalent rate Find the factor from one denominator to the other. Multiply the numerator by the same factor.
Example 1 b Complete the equivalent rate. Find the factor from one denominator to the other. Multiply the numerator by the same factor.
Example 2 Nigel paid $3. 60 to send 30 text messages. Use a unit rate to determine the cost to send 80 text messages. Write Find the rate as a fraction. the unit rate. Multiply unit rate by the number of text messages. $0. 12 × 80 = $9. 60 Nigel paid $9. 60 to send 80 text messages.
Example 3 a Tom buys some Hood River apples. A local fruit stand charges $3. 00 for every 2 pounds. Find the price Tom pays for 12 pounds of apples using equivalent fractions. Set up equivalent fractions. Multiply numerator by same number as denominator. Tom pays $18 for the apples.
Example 3 b Tom buys some Hood River apples. A local fruit stand charges $3. 00 for every 2 pounds. Find the price Tom pays for 12 pounds of apples using unit rates. Write Find the rate as a fraction. the unit rate. Multiply the cost by unit rate. $1. 50 × 12 = $18. 00 Tom pays $18 for the apples.
Exit Problems 1. Complete the equivalent rate: 2. Talia walked 7 miles in 2 hours. At this rate, how far will she walk in 5 hours?
