Esau’s wives • Genesis 26: 34 – 35 • Esau took two Hittite wives when he was 40 years old • They were a grief to the mind of Isaac and Rebekah • This will come into play later
Describe how Jacob takes Esau’s blessing. What is the difference between the birthright and blessing (both of which Jacob got instead of Esau)? • Genesis 27: 1 – 40 • Isaac was old and could not see; he wanted to give his blessing to Esau • Isaac told Esau to hunt game and make him savory food, and then Isaac would give Esau his blessing • Rebekah was listening and told Jacob she would make savory food from the flocks and Jacob would pretend to be Esau and get the blessing • Jacob pointed out that Esau was hairy, so Rebekah put Esau’s clothes on Jacob and skins of the kids of goats on Jacob • Jacob went to Isaac and pretended to be Esau • Isaac questioned him because his voice was Jacob’s, but he smelled and felt like Esau Jacob said he was Esau • Isaac gave the blessing to Jacob • • • Essentially, may God bless you (fatness of the earth, plenty of grain and wine Let people serve you and nations bow down to you Be master over your brethren Let your mother’s sons bow down to you Cursed are those that curse you; blessed are those that bless you

What is the difference between the birthright and blessing (both of which Jacob got instead of Esau)? • Genesis 27: 1 – 40 • Esau comes in from the field and Isaac and Esau find out they have been deceived • Esau wants a blessing too • Isaac says • • Dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth By your sword you shall live You shall serve your brother When you become restless, you shall break his yoke from your neck • A birthright was an honor given to the firstborn, bestowing “head of household” status and the right to inherit his father’s estate. • A blessing could be given regardless of birthright. However, a greater blessing was given to the one who held the birthright.
Why does Jacob leave and go to his uncle’s (why does Rebekah want him to leave, and what is the reason she gives)? • Genesis 27: 41 – 46 • Esau hated Jacob because of the stolen blessing and said he would kill Jacob after the days of mourning for his father (Isaac hadn’t died yet, but it was close at hand) • Rebekah finds out and tells Jacob to go to Haran to her brother Laban until Esau’s fury turns away • Rebekah tells Isaac she is weary of her life because of the daughters of Heth • Isaac tells Jacob to go take a wife from the land of Rebekah (Gen 28: 1 – 2)
