Francis Bacon 28 October 1909 – 28 April 1992 an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his bold, graphic and emotionally raw paintings. He began painting surrealism during his early 20 s. Before this time he drifted, earning his living as an interior decorator. His breakthrough came with the 1944 when he painted the Three studies for figures at the base of a crucifixion. His most expensive painting was sold on 13 November 2013, Three Studies of Lucian Freud sold at Christie's New York for $142. 4 million!
Francis Bacon Tasks: • Task 1: copy one of the Francis Bacon portrait using chalk pastels and the blending technique onto A 4 black sugar paper. If you don’t have pastels copy the image onto paper or into your book using pencil or pencil crayons. • Task 2: cut out images and stick onto your page if you can print them. Write down 5 key words to describe his work. • Task 3: using graphite or holding paper up to the computer screen trace the image onto your paper or into your book. Using oil pastels or felt tips complete a copy of the image. Remember to add texture for the grass. Once finished spray with hairspray if you have used pastels and stick into your book. • Task 4: Evaluate your work.

Task 3: oil pastel/felt tip study Task : Create a oil pastel or felt tip study of Francis Bacons three studies of figures at base of a crucifixion. 1. Cut out the orange picture from the next slide. 2. Graphite the back and copy onto cream sugar paper. Or trace via the computer screen or free draw the image. 3. Using oil pastels or felt tips create texture and blend the colours if you can to create an artists study of Bacon’s work.
