DANIEL 4 1. The Decree. Daniel 4 is the text of a decree from Nebuchadnezzar. He sends it to all in his kingdom telling them to honor the Most High God who has performed signs for him.

DANIEL 4 This decree would be like the leader of Communist China sending a decree endorsing the Christian God. 2. The Dream. Nebuchadnezzar dreams and asks his wise men to interpret it.

DANIEL 4 When they are unable to do so, Nebuchadnezzar calls on Daniel to give the interpretation. The king had dreamed of a tree which was growing larger. Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant.

DANIEL 4 A holy one says “Cut down the tree, strip its leaves and scatter its fruit. Leave the stump but bind it with iron and bronze. Then the one represented by the tree will become like an animal.

DANIEL 4 3. The Reason The fulfillment of the king’s dream will show the power of God over the kingdoms of the world and how He can be active in the affairs of men.

DANIEL 4 4. The Interpretation. The tree represents Nebuchadnezzar and the fact that the world is dependent on him. The “cutting down” represents that he will be humbled but not completely destroyed.

DANIEL 4 For a time he will be as an animal, in isolation from people and eating the grass of the field. Finally, when he acknowledges that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men, he will be restored.

DANIEL 4 5. The Advice. Daniel advises the king to renounce his sins by doing what is right and being kind to the oppressed.

DANIEL 4 6. The Insanity. Twelve months later, Nebuchadnezzar is on the roof of his palace taking pride in the great city of Babylon he has made.

DANIEL 4 A voice tells him his authority is taken away and he will live like an animal for a period of seven times. During this time his hair would grow long to look like feathers and his nails would be like claws.

DANIEL 4 7. The Confession. When Nebuchadnezzar raised his eyes toward heaven, his sanity was restored. Then he praised the Most High and acknowledged that His power is complete and eternal.

DANIEL 4 8. The Results. Nebuchadnezzar is returned to his honor and he sends a decree telling of this event and declaring honor to the Most High. Daniel 4 is a copy of this proclamation.
