Describe Abraham’s interaction with the three “men” in Genesis 18. Eating • Gen 18: 1 The LORD appeared to Abraham • Gen 18: 2 Abraham looks and sees three men; he runs to them and bows to the ground • Gen 18: 3 – 8 Abraham has water brought to wash their feet, has Sarah make bread, and has a herdsman prepare a young calf which he serves with butter and milk Promising a son • Gen 18: 9 – 15 • The men ask where Sarah is, and Abraham says here in the tent • The LORD tells Abraham He will return according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son • Sarah and Abraham were well advanced in age, and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing • Sarah laughed to herself saying how shall she have a son • The LORD says “Why did Sarah laugh…Is anything to hard for the LORD? ” • Sarah denies laughing, and the LORD says “No, but you did laugh!”
Describe Abraham’s interaction with the three “men” in Genesis 18. • Discussion of Sodom and Gomorrah • Gen 18: 16 – 33 • As the men leave to go to Sodom, The LORD tells Abraham that He is going to Sodom and Gomorrah to see if the outcry against them because of their grievous sin is true • The men leave toward Sodom and Abraham discusses saving the city for the sake of the righteous • • • Save for 50 righteous in Sodom yes Save for 45 righteous in Sodom yes Save for 40 righteous in Sodom yes Save for 30 righteous in Sodom yes Save for 20 righteous in Sodom yes Save for 10 righteous in Sodom yes • The LORD departs and Abraham returns to his place
Describe Abraham’s interaction with the three “men” in Genesis 18. • Why does the LORD tell Abraham what He is going to do to Sodom and Gomorrah? • Abraham will become a great and mighty nation, and all nations will be blessed in him (reference to the promises in Gen 12: 1 -3) – Gen 18: 18 • Abraham will command his children and household to keep the way of the LORD – Gen 18: 19
How does Lot greet the angels and what does he insist? What happened at Lot’s house? • Lot, who is sitting in the gate, bows and asks them to stay at his house and wash their feet so that they may rise early and go on their way – Gen 19: 1 -2 • However, they say they will stay in the square • Lot strongly insists they stay with him and makes them a feast – Gen 19: 3 • While at Lot’s house, the men of Sodom (young and old from every quarter) surround Lot’s house and call for Lot to bring the men out so they may know them carnally • Lot tries to reason with the men saying don’t be so wicked • He offers his two daughters • Explains the men are in his house to prevent what they want to do • The men of Sodom refuse and tell Lot to stand back • They say “This one came in to sojourn, and he keeps acting as a judge” • They say they will deal worse with Lot than the strangers • The angels pull Lot inside and strike the men outside with blindness so that they became weary of finding the door
Describe the escape from, and destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. • The men/angels tell Lot to take all his family and get out of Sodom because the LORD sent them to destroy the city – Gen 19: 12 • Lot speaks to his sons-in-law, but they think he is joking – Gen 19: 14 • Morning comes and the angles again urge Lot to take his wife and daughters out of the city – Gen 19: 15 • Lot lingers, so the angels take the hands of Lot, his wife, and his daughters and they take them out of the city – Gen 19: 16 • Angels tell them to escape to the mountains and not look back – Gen 19: 17 • Lot pleads to be allowed to go to a small city nearby (Zoar) lest some evil overtakes him in the mountains and he dies; the angels say yes and to hurry – Gen 19: 18 – 23 • God destroys the cities, the plains, the inhabitants, and what grew on the ground – Gen 19: 24 – 25 • Lot’s wife looks back and turns into a pillar of salt – Gen 19: 26 • Abraham sees the smoke that went up like a furnace – Gen 19: 27 – 29
Is there a contradiction between Gen 19: 8 and Gen 19: 14? Explain. • Gen 19: 8 says Lot has two daughters that have not known a man • Gen 19: 14 says Lot had sons-in-law who had married his daughters • First possibility • Lot could have had more than two daughters • Gen 19: 15 the angels say to take his two daughters who are here • This could contrast Gen 19: 14 with daughters that are married and possibly not here in the house • That would mean Lot’s married daughters did not make it out of Sodom • Second possibility • The term “who had married his daughters” could be interpreted “who were to marry” • This is how NAS, ESV, RSV, and NIV interpret the Gen 19: 14 • Lot’s firstborn is saved Gen 19: 31 • Consider Matthew 1: 18 -20 • Vs. 18 betrothed, before they came together • Vs. 19 Joseph her husband • Vs. 20 Mary your wife Bonus Question!
Did Lot have sons? • Gen 19: 12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city…” • The men/angels ask Lot if he has any sons in this place • No mention of Lot having sons anywhere else • So, either Lot had sons that didn’t make it out of Sodom (or lived somewhere else) • Or Lot didn’t have sons and it is just a questions from the angels Bonus Question!
What applications can we make from the escape from Sodom and Gomorrah • Be cautious of bad influences on your family • • Do what you can to provide the best Spiritual situation for your family This can mean making hard decisions Lot liked living in a city, but this was not good for his family Appears that his wife and sons-in-law were not good influences • Sin is hard to leave • It is hard to leave the entrapments of sin (Lot had to be taken out of the city) • Don’t compromise when all around is evil • It’s easy slip into what the group is doing • Lot continued to speak up for good • Gen 19: 9 “this one… keeps acting as a judge…” Bonus Question!
Describe what happened in Genesis 19: 30 – 38. • After Lot pleads to go Zoar, he leaves Zoar with his daughters because he is afraid to live there (possibly because Zoar was evil too) • They dwell in a cave in the mountains • Lot’s firstborn daughter comes up with a plan to “…preserve the lineage of our father. ” • On the first night, they get Lot drunk with wine and his firstborn lies with him • The same thing happens on the second night with the younger daughter • The firstborn bears a son and names him Moab he is the father of the Moabites • The younger bears a son and names him Ben-Ammi he is the father of the people of Ammon

Describe the events of Genesis 20. • Abimelech called Abraham and asked him why he had done this to him • You have done deeds to me that ought not be done • Abraham says that he didn’t think the fear of God was in this place, so he thought they would kill him on account of Sarah • Abraham says that Sarah is actually his half-sister (same father) • Abraham also says that when God told him to leave his father’s house, Abraham told Sarah to say she was his sister in every place they went • Abimelech restores Sarah, gives Abraham sheep, oxen, male and female servants, and 1, 000 pieces of silver • Abraham prays and Abimelech, Abimelech’s wife, and his maidservants are healed (the LORD had closed the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah)
