LESSON 5: WATER BAPTISM Baptism comes from the Greek word BAPTIZO which means to dip, immerse or whelm, that is to cover WHOLLY with fluid or to dye a garment.

I. UNDERSTANDING WATER BAPTISM A. It is identifying with the DEATH and RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ. In general, it refers to the act of identifying one thing to another thing in such a way that its nature or character is CHANGED.

I. UNDERSTANDING WATER BAPTISM B. It is ORDINANCE or SACRAMENT ordained by Christ. The aim of this sacrament is to REPRESENT the believers’ entrance into the kingdom of God through REGENERATION.
I. UNDERSTANDING WATER BAPTISM C. It is an act of OBEDIENCE to God. In Matthew 28: 18 -20, Jesus COMMANDED us to make disciples of all nations by baptizing them in the name of the FATHER and of the SON and of the HOLY SPIRIT.
I. UNDERSTANDING WATER BAPTISM D. It is a TESTIMONY to others that a TRANSFORMATION has occurred.

I. UNDERSTANDING WATER BAPTISM E. It is a PUBLIC TESTIMONY that one is willing to DIE for Christ. F. It is ATTENDING one’s own FUNERAL SERVICE. A funeral service must follow since DEATH took place when we got BORN AGAIN. G. It is a RESURRECTION to new life.

II. THE PURPOSE OF JESUS’ BAPTISM The baptism of Jesus indicates that He was CONSECRATED to God and officially APPROVED by Him, as especially shown in the DESCENT of the Holy Spirit and the words of the Father.
III. A TYPE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner – those who are not your offspring. Genesis 17: 1213
