IV. Language Focus: asking questions, part 1 Asking questions can be very easy when the answer is yes/no. We call these questions ”short answer questions” because we are not looking for detail in the speaker's response, just a yes or no. Examples: 1. Do you like being a pet food tester? a) Yes! I love it / yes, I do / Sure! It’s the best job / etc. . . b) Not a all / No, I don’t / I hate it / etc. . . We can make short questions for any context, no matter if you are talking about the past, the present, or the future. Go to the next slide to see an example. . .
IV. Language Focus: asking questions, part 2 Examples of short questions in all the English tenses (past, present, future) Tense Simple Present Do you have a certificate for this job? IV. Language Focus: asking questions, part 3 We will analyze the structure of a regular short question, go to the next slide to see the structure of the question below. Does Auxiliary verb your boss Subject pay you verb well complement? We know this example is in simple present for two reasons: ■ It starts with Does – the auxiliary verb used in simple present to make negatives and questions. ■ The verb pay is in infinitive or base form - it is not continous because it doesn’t have ING at the end
IV. Language Focus: asking questions, part 3 Let’s analyze another question in a different tense, go to the next slide to see the changes. Is your boss paying you well?

IV. Language Focus: asking questions, part 3 Let’s analyze another question in a different tense, go to the next slide to see the changes. Is verb ”be” your boss Subject paying you verb-ing well complement? We know this question is present continuous for two reasons: ■ It starts with verb “be” (ser o estar) – usamos is porque el sujeto “your boss” se conjuga como si fuera “he”, y cuando usamos “be” con he/she/it , lo debemos escribir como “is”. ■ The verb paying has ing – en español es la terminación endo/ando. Comiendo, saliendo, o como en el ejemplo, pagando.
V. Practice: identify the question without mistakes Out of three questions, one is correct. Find it and write it in your copybook. 1. a) Do you like testing waterslides? b) Does you like testing waterslides? c) Do you likes testing waterslides? 2. a) Is your boss work as a pet food tester? b) Is your boss working as a pet food tester? c) Are your boss working as a pet food tester? 3. a) Did your last boss payed you well? b) Did your last boss pays you well? c) Did your last boss pay you well? 4. a) Does a bed tester work many hours? b) Do a bed tester work many hours? c) Do a bed tester works many hours?
