Lesson 5 5 Choosing a Method Word Problems

Lesson 5. 5 Choosing a Method / Word Problems

Warm – up #7 Solve each systems using any method. You must use each method (graphing, substitution, and elimination) at least once. 1) Decide the best method for each system and write a sentence for each problem to explain why the method you chose works best for that system. “It was easiest” is not an explanation. USE MATH VOCABULARY! 2) Actually solve the equations using your decided methods. 1) y = 4 x + 11 3 x – 2 y = -7 3) y = x – 2 y = -5/3 x + 6 2) 3 x – 7 y = 6 2 x + 7 y = 4 4) 2 x + y = 23 3 x + 2 y = 37 Coefficient, solved, variable, set equal to, fraction, additive inverse, cancel, system of equations, substitution.

1) At a restaurant, the cost of 2 burritos and 1 tortilla salad is $20. 57. The cost for three burritos and 3 tortilla salads is $36. 24. Which pair of equations can be used to determine b, the cost of a burrito, and t the cost of a tortilla salad? A) b + t = 20. 57 3 b + 3 t = 36. 34 B) 2 b+t = 20. 57 b + t = 36. 24 C) 2 b + t = 20. 57 3 b + 3 t = 36. 24 D) b + 2 t = 20. 57 b + t = 36. 24

2) The Latino Club sold 50 tickets to the dance. Pre-sale tickets were $10 and tickets at the door were sold for $15. If the club made $690 how many of each type of ticket was sold?

3) Kurt cleared the cash register of nickels and dimes. There were twenty coins in all, and the total value of the coins was $1. 35. How many of each type of coin were in the cash register?

4) Nathan is going to the carnival and he has two ticket options. In one option he can buy an admission ticket for $10. 00 and then pay 50 cents a ride, or he can buy an admission ticket for $5. 00 and then pay $1 per ride. How many rides will Nathan have the ride so that the options cost the same amount?

5) The length of a rectangle is 1 m more than twice its width. If the perimeter is 110 m, find the dimensions.
