ORGANIZING �Structuring of resources and activities to accomplish objectives in an efficient and effective manner
FOUR FUNDAMENTAL PILLARS OF ORGANIZING 1. Standardization- the development of uniform practices for organizational members to follow in doing their jobs.
2. Specialization- refers to grouping standardized organizational tasks into separate jobs.
3. Centralization- is having the decision-making authority rest with managers at the top of an organizations hierarchy. 4. Departmentalization- refers to grouping organizational members and resources together to achieve the work of the larger organization
How Authority is delegated? �Line authority- refers to the formal power that a member is given to manage and make decisions about other people and resources lower down the chain of command
�Staff authority- refers to the formal power a member is given to provide advice and offer specific technical expertise to other members
�Delegation- is the process of giving authority to a person or group to make decisions in a specified sphere of authority

DIMENSIONS OF JOB DESIGN, JOB SPECIFICATION AND JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB DESIGN- the process of laying out job responsibilities and duties and describing how they are to be performed
TASK CHARACTERISTICS �Focus on how the work itself is accomplished and the range and nature of the tasks associated with a particular job. - Autonomy - Task variety - Feedback from job
KNOWLEDGE CHARACTERISTICS �Job complexity- degree to which the job tasks are complex and difficult to perform. �Information processing- the degree to which a job requires attending to and processing data.
�Problem solving- degree to which job requires unique ideas �Skill variety- job requires the incumbent to use variety of skills to perform �Specialization- refers to the extent to which job involves performing specialized knowledge and skills.
SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS �Social support- job involves the opportunity for advice and assistance from others in the workplace, �Interdependence- job depends on others-and others depend on the job �Interaction outside the organization
CONTEXTUAL CHARACTERISTICS �Refer to the setting or environment of the job, such as working in extreme temperature.
WHAT IS JOB DESCRIPTION? �A written statement of the key features of a job along with the activities required to perform it effectively.
WHAT IS JOB ENRICHMENT? �An approach to including more challenge and responsibility in jobs to make them more appealing to employee.
MODIFIED WORK SCHEDULES AND JOB DESIGN
�Flexible working hours �Compressed workweek- a full time work schedule that allows 40 hours of work in less than five days. �Telecommuting- an arrangement with ones employer to use a computer to perform work at home or in satellite office.
�Job sharing- a work arrangement in which two people who work part-time share one job. �Part time and Temporary work
