Lesson 3 – The digestive system The diagram shows the organs of the digestive

Lesson 3 – The digestive system The diagram shows the organs of the digestive system and how these organs are involved in digestion. Food doesn’t travel through all of these organs. Some of these organs either make or store substances to help with digestion. Use the information on the diagram and your knowledge of previous lessons to help you answer the questions.

Lesson 3 – Questions 1. Write down the order of the digestive organs that food travels through. 2. Where is protein digested in our body? 3. Imagine you ate a chicken sandwich that contained butter. What food groups would you have eating? 4. Write down the journey of the chicken sandwich. Include the pathway through the digestive system and where each food group is broken down. Lesson 3 – answers 1. Mouth oesophagus stomach small intestine large intestine. 2. Protein is digested in the stomach and small intestine. 3. If you’d ate a chicken sandwich you’d have eaten starch (bread), protein (chicken) and fat (butter). 4. The chicken sandwich’s journey starts in the mouth where starch (bread) is broken down. Then the food is forced down the oesophagus into the stomach. In the stomach the protein (chicken) is broken down and then the food passes into the small intestine where fat is broken down (butter) and all the other food groups are broken down further too. 5. Bile is made in the liver and stored in the small intestine.
