Lesson 29 10/26/17 SWBAT determine the biodiversity of a pond by analyzing macroinvertebrates. Do Now: Take out HW
Announcements • Exam on Monday (Ch. 3, 4, 5) • Make-up lab at lunch today
Benthic Bugs Lab • 20 seconds to scoop as many macroinvertebrates out of the water as possible. Tabulate/Calculate: • Percent Composition • EPT/Midge Ratio • Pollution tolerance index • Simpson’s diversity index
Benthic Bugs Lab • Gather Materials – One student: grab a stream and carry with TWO HANDS – Another student: Grab calculators for your group – A third student: Grab a fishnet and tray (there are only 4 – you will need to share these!) • Lab safety: – Don’t get water on the calculators! – Don’t drink the streams!
Metrics to measure Biodiversity • Simpson’s diversity index – Quantifies the biodiversity of a habitat – Measures the probability that two individuals randomly selected from a sample will belong to the different species. – Higher the number higher the biodiversity
Lab Clean Up • Put “stream” on the counter • Put back calculators and other materials on back counter • Clean up any spilled water
Homework • Finish calculations and analysis questions • I will send out the data from other groups for you to use
Unit 3 Exam • Ch. 3, 4 and 5 • 20 MC questions and 1 FRQ in 45 min. • Tips: – Look at slides! – Review Do Now and Quiz questions – Don’t panic during the FRQ- the answer is probably simpler than you think – Pay attention to the FRQ verbs!
