LESSON 25 Material Properties Natural Manufactured Boards Within
LESSON 2/5 Material Properties – Natural & Manufactured Boards Within this lesson you will cover: § § To gain an understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Names of different manufactured boards. Understand the environmental impact of manufactured boards. How manufactured boards appearance is improved during manufacture.

MANUFACTURED BOARDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Manufactured boards are made from the waste sections of felled trees – the parts which are of little use as planks. The wood is reduced to pulp, particles or thin strips and bonded together using special adhesives or resins. Manufactured boards: § come in sheet form (usually 1. 2 x 2. 4 m) § are extremely stable and of uniform thickness § are less expensive than laminating planks of timber § can be covered with veneers § are available in a variety of thicknesses (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 22 mm etc). These flat-pack drawers are made from MDF covered with a veneer.

MANUFACTURED BOARDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Manufactured boards & the environment. Almost one million tonnes of MDF is produced in the UK every year. It is a cheap and popular engineered wood product widely used for furniture and other products in homes, offices and retail businesses. However, as MDF cannot be recycled, waste MDF either has to be incinerated or ends up in landfill. A new biodegradable and recyclable form of medium density fibreboard (MDF) has been created that could dramatically reduce the problem of future waste. https: //youtu. be/gs. YYkz. Xi 4 LQ
MANUFACTURED BOARDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Using manufactured board Advantages • Available in large sheets with few faults or defects • Aesthetic flaws like knots can be eliminated, boards require very little finishing • Made of wood that might otherwise go to landfill • Available in a vast range of surface finishes Disadvantages • Adhesives used in manufacture can be hazardous when inhaled • Adhesives used in manufacture can also blunt tools quickly • Many traditional woodworking joints cannot be used and the edges are hard to finish • Boards are prone to absorbing moisture
COMPRESSION Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Compression is the METHOD of using adhesives, heat & pressure to combine shreds, chips or pulp to produce a larger board. For example MDF. § Oriented strand board comprises compressed shreds of wood § Chipboard and MDF are often covered with a melamine or Formica® laminate https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=otm. Fb 7 ey 9 u. M Q: Where might we obtain the raw materials for making compressed manufactured boards? Q: Why are compressed boards weaker than laminated Answer these questions in your boards? exercise book.
MANUFACTURED BOARDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Improving manufactured boards - Veneers Veneer is wood in the form of a thin layer or sheet having the grain direction of the wood parallel to the surface. A typical thickness would be anything from 6 mm to 0. 25 mm. Veneer is obtained by either rotary cutting or slicing. It is applied to manufactured boards to make them look more REALISTIC.
MANUFACTURED BOARDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Veneers are made for 3 reasons: 1. To decorate surfaces – veneers of high value or attractive appearance are applied over a lowerquality material such as MDF. 2. Cross-ply construction to make plywood panels. Alternating grain direction provides increased strength. 3. Veneer bent to shapes (laminating). Veneers can be formed to shape in a mould by gluing multiple layers, contours and angles can be formed that could not be attained with a single piece of wood of similar thickness.
MANUFACTURED BOARDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Laminating Several layer of flexible veneer are glued together under pressure in a shaped mould. Once the glue has dried the veneers will stay in their new shape. Making curves by laminating has several advantages over machining and steam bending: • Greater stability • Tighter curves • Increased strength (cross directional strength)
RESEARCH HOMEWORK Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the properties of manufactured boards. Using the internet & your knowledge learnt during todays lesson complete the following questions for the following lesson: 1. In a short paragraph write what manufactured boards are and how they are different to hardwoods/softwoods. 2. What are manufactured boards made from? 3. What do companies such as IKEA add to manufactured boards to improve their appearance? 4. Briefly explain, with sketches the laminating process. 5. Briefly explain why manufactured can not be recycled after their usage.
