The Four Functions of Computers Input Storage Processing Output

Input

The computer will collect data or from you through the following methods: Keying Mouse or Touchpad Stylus Touch Screen Speaking into a microphone

Data vs. Information Data Information raw, unprocessed numbers, data that has been characters, or symbols. processed so that it can be understood and used in decision making.

Storage

The computer saves, and stores data or instructions in its memory for use during processing

Processing

The computer interprets and processes that data you input. It adds, multiplies, divides, finds or manipulates data (numbers, text, or symbols) to complete a task you have given it.

Output

The computer displays or produces information from the data that is processed. The output might be something you see on the screen, hear or command.

Summary Input Storage Processing Output • The computer collects data or instruction from the user. • The computer takes the data and instruction and saves it. • The computer interprets and processes the data or instructions. • The computer displays or produces the data from the information.

Assignment In groups of two or three, think of an item that you can relate the four functions of computers to.
