LESSON 2 PARTS OF A SONG
FREE WRITE Do: Write about anything on your mind. Do: Write for the whole five minutes. Do: Keep your pen and pencil moving for the whole five minutes. Don’t: Worry about conventions like spelling or punctuation.
BRAINSTORM In your journal, write everything you know about the parts of a song in one minute. Ready… set… GO!
Let’s explore the different parts of a song: • The title is the name of the song.
• The theme is the main subject of the song. • The hook is the part of the song that catches, or “hooks, ” a listener’s attention and makes the song easy to remember.
• The verse uses details to support the title, theme, and hook. Songs typically include multiple verses. • The chorus conveys the main subject of the song. The chorus is usually simpler than the verses, and it often contains the title.
• The bridge introduces a twist or new way of thinking about the song. It usually occurs toward the song’s end. Not all songs have a bridge.

A song outline is a rough sketch of what the lyrics will communicate. Outline Example: Title: “I Love My Mom” Verse 1 topic: Things I like about my mom Chorus main subject: How much I love my mom Verse 2 topic: Things my mom does for me Chorus main subject (repeated): How much I love my mom Verse 3 topic: Things I like doing with my mom
HOMEWORK Song Structure Practice Ø Print or write down the lyrics to one of your favorite songs. (This song should be appropriate for school use. ) Ø Label the following parts of a song on the lyrics you choose: title, verse, chorus, bridge and hook. Ø Write a sentence that identifies theme of the song.
