Translating word and phrases into algebraic expressions • Addition • Words to look for: sum, total, more then, added, increased, plus • Phrases to look for: added to a number, increased by a number • Expressions to look for: x+4, 7+x
Subtraction • Words to look for: less, minus, decreased by, difference, less than • Phrases to look for: the difference of something and a number, less then a number • Expressions to look for: 5 -x, x-8
multiplication • Words to look for: product, times, multiplied • Phrases to look for: the product of a number and, a number times • Expressions to look for: 12(x), 3 x
division • Words to look for: quotient, divided by, divided into • Phrases to look for: the quotient of a number and, something divided by a number • Expressions to look for: x/6, 10/x
