5 min Do Now Materials: (S) Personal white board on the carpet; (T) bell or chime Close your eyes and count each time I clap. (Clap 5 timesl pause, and then clap 1 more time). Open your eyes! How many claps did you hear? Right. 5 and 1 make 6! This time, listen and write a number bond for my clapping. (Have them fill in number bonds for 3 and 3 & 4 and 2)

A squirrel collected 6 nuts for the fall. With your cubes, show me a stick as long as her 6 nuts. Begin with the 5 stick. She buried 4 nuts in the ground and stored the other 2 in the tree. Break your stick and hold up the piece that show many are in the ground. Show the stick that shows how many were in the tree. She took her six nuts and made a set of 4

Mini-Lesson 12 min Students need a personal white board, 5 cubes in a stick, and 1 loose cube. Now, draw 6 nuts on your white board. With your partner, take turns deciding how the squirrel should store her nuts. Circle the nuts she will bury and box the ones she will hide in the tree.
