Lesson 100 Learning Goal You should be able
Lesson 100 Learning Goal: (You should be able to…) Analyze the specimen for signs of life Make a claim, provide evidence and support with the reasoning! : (Can you …) Analyze the specimen for signs of life Make a claim, provide evidence and support with the reasoning
Characteristics of Life Vocabulary Cell (Biological) Metabolism Respiration Response to a stimulus Nutrients Reproduction DNA
Cell organelles Vocabulary vacuole mitochondria lysosome cell membrane cell wall cell nucleus cytoplasm chloroplast golgi body endoplasmic reticulum (ER) ribosome Other cell essentials: chemical receptors and messengers enzymes DNA
Write to Think 100 1. What are the characteristics of life you are looking for to classify something as living, dead or non living? 2. Can you say that soil is living? Explain. 3. Can you recall at least six characteristics of life? 4. What is your mindset about feedback on a piece of work? Do you see it as negative “I made mistakes and I did poorly” or positive “ I’m going to learn from the feedback in order to improve my skills”
Looking for some signs of life in soil • How do you know that life exists in the soil? • Probably look for some signs of life!!!! (C of L) • Some micro-organisms, example bacteria, fungi leaves or twigs might be present in soil? • What would they be doing? What would they have done? What C of L can you see? • “Answers” – Sample A had …Soil and sugar mixed together – Sample B had …Soil and yeast and sugar – Sample C had …Soil and Alka seltzer (Indigestion)
Bacteria and fungi growing in a medium
Soil Sample CER Feedback • Read feedback • If you didn’t hand it in or you were absent …
Example of a CER • “Is Air matter? ” • Air is matter (claim). • We found that the weight/mass of the balloon increases each time we pumped more air into it (evidence). • This shows that air has weight/mass which is one of the characteristics of matter (reasoning).
Example of a CER • “ Is wood living? ” • Wood is dead (claim). • It has a cellular structure. It has a lot of organized hollow tubes. (evidence). • Although wood has C of L #1, the cells are not carrying out C of L #2, energy is not being used. (reasoning). • Although wood appears to have C of L # 4, nothing is being moved and the system doesn’t seem to come from or go anywhere. (reasoning). • Therefore wood may have been alive at one point as it showed some C of L but it isn’t functioning now so It’s probably dead.
Example of a CER • Diseases are caused by all microorganisms*. (claim). • because they* multiply rapidly (reasoning) • No evidence was cited
Your go … Practice • You will be: • looking at a picture, watching a video clip and then reading a very short article about Bread • Repetition is great as it reinforces learning!!!! • You will be: • Writing a 2 or 3 paragraph statement making a claim, with evidence and reasoning about bread • Use supporting evidence from all three sources. • USE YOUR C of L sheet for reasoning! Reason/Explain how the evidence supports your claim using the C of L. • Then write a final copy on lined paper.
Bread • • • Recap evidence Notes on the back of the information sheet Picture Video Information (highlight)

How to “cite” a piece of evidence • You must reference the source of your evidence within the statement Example: • “Yeast works by eating sugar and excreting carbon dioxide and alcohol as byproduct”, (Text 1, line 6) this demonstrates the characteristic of life #2. • “Yeast can produce small buds” (Picture) this demonstrates the C of L # 5. • Your final version on lined paper: • Write a CLAIM sentence then … • Paragraph 1 has evidence from the picture with citation (see the example) and explanations WHY this supports your claim • Paragraph 2 has evidence from the video clip with citation (see the example)and explanations WHY this supports your claim • Paragraph 3 has evidence from the Text 1 with citation (see the example)and explanations WHY this supports your claim • A concluding paragraph is not necessary but could be fruitful.
End of lesson
Your Go … Practice • You will be looking at a picture, watching a video clip and then reading a very short article about bread. • You want to take a few QUICK notes! • Based on the information from all three you will WRITE a claim for bread. • Is bread Living, dead or nonliving!! • Support your claim with some evidence and reasoning. • This is practice … for tomorrow!
