LESSON 10 SANCTIFICATION Sanctification is a vital part of redemption. Without sanctification one cannot be saved.

SANCTIFICATION v. Sanctification: is the separation of the Holy from the Unholy. It is the dedication and consecration of the Christian both in Character and Conduct. § 1 Pet 1: 15 § But just as he who called you is HOLY, so be HOLY in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am Holy. ”

SANCTIFICATION v. This is the root word form which the word Saint comes from. Everyone who is sanctified is a SAINT. v. People were always sanctified, set apart for God and his purpose. We are no different, we are set apart to be God’s People, (THE CHURCH) just as the nation of Israel was set apart from the nations to be God’s chosen people.

SANCTIFICATION v 1. MAN MUST BE SANCTIFIED BY GOD: § 1 Thes 5: 23 § May God himself, the God of peace, SANCTIFY you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

SANCTIFICATION § 2 Thes 2: 13 § But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the SANCTIFYING work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

YOUR CALLING v. YOU WERE CALLED BY THE GOSPEL, (MESSAGE OF CHRIST CRUCIFIED FOR SINS), TO BELIEF IN THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL, AND TO BE SANTIFIED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, BECAUSE YOU BELIEVED. THIS IS ALL ACCORDING TO THE ETERNAL PURPOSE AND PLAN OF GOD.

SPIRIT SANCTIFYING WORK § 1 Pet 1: 2 § Who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the SANCTIFYING work of the Spirit. For obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood. v. IT IS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO SANTIFY YOU, YOU CAN’T DO IT ON YOUR OWN

SANCTIFIED § 1 Cor 1: 28 -30 § He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things- and the things that are not- to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that YOU ARE “IN CHRIST JESUS” who has become for us wisdom from God- that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

JESUS IS FOR US WISDOM v. WISDOM IS THE PROPER USE OF KNOWLEDGE. THAT IS CHRIST JESUS AND THE PROPER USE IS THIS: v v JESUS IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS JESUS IS OUR HOLINESS JESUS IS OUR REDEMPTION THERE IS NO OTHER NAME GIVEN BY BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED!

SANTIFICATION § Heb 10: 10 § And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. v. The NIV Foot note reads: made holy, Justified set apart in consecration to God, and now experiencing the process of continuing sanctification. v. You are not your own, you were bought with a price!!!!! The precious blood of Christ.

SANCTIFYED By the Blood § Heb 10: 29 § How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? v. As members of the Lords body, the Church, we are the new covenant people. Sanctified by his work on the cross.

SANCTIFYED BY HIS BLOOD § Heb 13: 11 -12 § The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people HOLY through his own blood.

GOD SANCTIFIES AND THE OBEDIENT ONES ARE THE SANCTIFIED § Heb 2: 11 § Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises. ”

QUESTION ? ? v. WHEN WERE YOU MADE HOLY? v HOW AND WHEN DID GOD MAKE YOU A SON? § John 1: 12 § Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of god- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

THE RIGHT TO BECOME! v. JUST MERELY BELIEF DOES NOT SAVE ANYONE, SATAIN BELIEVES, BUT WILL NOT BE SAVED. BELIEF GIVES ONE THE RIGHT TO BECOME A CHILD OF GOD. THEY MUST BE BORN INTO THE FAMILY OF GOD. THE FIRST STEP IS TO BELIEVE. IF A PERSON DOES NOT BELIEVE THERE IS NO REASON TO EXPLAIN WHAT THEY MUST DO. THAT IS WHAT THE PASSAGE SAID, READ IT AGAIN.

GOD SANTIFIES AND THE OBEDIENT ONES ARE THE SANCTIFIED § 1 Cor 1: 1 -3 § Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, to the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ-their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are Children of God v. We are children of God when we are born again. That’s what John 12: 1 said, and this is not our natural birth. § John 2: 5 -8 § Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but Spirit gives birth to Spirit.

WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD § John 3: 5 -8 § “You should not be surprised at my saying, “You must be born again. ” The wind blows wherever it pleases, You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. ”

New Creation “IN CHRIST” § 2 Cor 5: 17 § Therefore if any man is “IN CHRIST” He is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. v. THIS IS THE PROCESS OF “THE NEW BIRTH!” I want to be plain and understood on this point, the new birth is essential for one to enter the kingdom of God.

BORN INTO THE FAMILY OF GOD v. The new birth is the new life “IN CHRIST JESUS. ” v. WHEN YOU ARE BORN AGAIN ALL THINGS BECAME NEW. v. NEW Name: Christian v. NEW Family: The Family of God v. NEW Brother: Christ himself v. You are a NEW creature: Born Again v. NEW Focus: Jesus Christ v. NEW Purpose in life: Service to God v. We become the Sons of God!!

OBEY THE GOSPEL v. This all happens when we are obedient to the Gospel of Christ. v. What is this Gospel? ? ? § 1 Cor 15: 1 -6 Now I make known to you, brethren, THE GOSPEL which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

THE GOSPEL § For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep;

THE GOSPEL v. There it is in it’s simplest form. The Gospel is a singular, particular teaching that the Apostles taught. It is the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. This is the teaching that was so dear to them that they were willing to die for. Christ had accomplished the work of God on that cross, and it is summed up in the word REDEMPTION!

OBEY THE GOSPEL v. This teaching is an historical fact that a man named Jesus Christ did in fact live and die on a Roman Cross. That he arose from the dead on the third day as was predicted in scripture. v. BUT THE SCRIPTURES SAY WE MUST OBEY THE GOSPEL. HOW DOES ONE OBEY A HISTORICAL FACT?

OBEY THE GOSPEL § Romans 6: 17&18 § But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that FORM of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. v. So the Teaching was the Death Burial and Resurrection, but the form was something else. It is in fact the new birth.

The choice to OBEY or NOT § 2 Thes 1: 17 & 18 § and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power in flaming fire, rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus: v. It’s that simple, obey or not, everyone has the choice. If we neglect the salvation offer we have made our choice not to obey!

OBEY THE GOSPEL v. Obey the Gospel, this is NOT a work, IT IS AN ACT OF FAITH. READ HEBREWS CHAPTER 11, BY FAITH, …. v. YOU BY FAITH HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN, and it is a work, of God!

SAVED BY THE WATER § 1 Peter 3: 20 & 21 § who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

OBEY THE GOSPEL v. Jesus commanded: § Mat 28: 19 & 20 § “ Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. ”

BAPTIZING v. It seems that in baptizing, (the new birth) all things come together. We enter a new life based on the finished work of CHRIST on the cross. That is the focal point of our faith, and that which we become obedient too. v. THE WORD BAPTIZE MEANS TO EMERSE OR PLUNGE INTO. THE FORM MUST BE FOLLOWED AS WE HAVE EXAMPLES

EXAMPLES OF CONVERSION v. Acts 2: I want you to notice verses 23 – 36 speak about the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. THEN! § Verse 38 & 39 says: Peter said to them, “ Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself. ”

GOSPEL AND THE FORM v. The Gospel: the DEATH, BURAL, AND RESURECTION of Christ, to pay for your sins is the teaching. v. Baptism, the emersion in water, is the form that one uses to obey this Gospel, and notice it symbolizes the death and burial of YOU are being buried in water, and raised from that grave to a new life!

EXCLUSIVE v. Obedience to the gospel is the exclusive avenue to the saving work of GOD on the cross. One must obey the teaching in its proper form, and sprinkling, pouring, or any other form one follows which does not enact the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ will not fit. One is only “IN CHRIST” if he follows the pattern which the Bible teaches. A prayer is only a prayer, and one is not “IN CHRIST” from a prayer.

Dressed “IN CHRIST” § Gal 3: 26 -29 § You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
