Did you get…? The Liberation Militia is a group led by noughts who was to promote nought rights, protest for change in society and are against Cross supremacy. It is referred to as Mr Hadley as a ‘terrorist group’. At the start of the novel, it isn’t clear whether this is a peaceful protest group or whether it has a dangerous and more violent side. We learn more of this as the novel develops and it is clear that Callum’s dad and brother are involved in some way. Why include this in the novel? Perhaps, Blackman is trying to show the impact of division and inequality in society and what it might push people to do. She might also be addressing the stereotypical viewpoint that some people hold that people who are different are ‘dangerous’ or ‘badly behaved’ – we have seen this prejudiced, judgemental view through some of the characters. She could also be encouraging people to join together and protest against things that are unfair or unjust.
