2. How do you prepare for potential interviews when you’re the point person?

3. How do you increase your chances of an accurate story resulting from the interview?

Exercise In your groups, consider the following scenario and related questions. Then, 1. Determine if the questions are ones you can answer. 2. If yes, use the 4 Square Method graphic to formulate answers. 3. Situate the question in the context of Spark, Youth/Adult Partnerships, Youth Program Quality, or Engagement. Use the talking points in your workbook to support your answer. 4. If they are questions you cannot answer, to whom would you direct the reporter? 5. What would you say to re-direct them?

Scenario A reporter from the Atlanta Journal - Constitution contacts you because she found out Georgia 4 -H participates in the National 4 -H shooting sports program and she wants to write a story. Because you are a 4 -H shooting sports coordinator, she wants to schedule an interview.

Sharing Answers Someone from each group will read the questions and give the audience the responses created by your group. The audience can provide constructive feedback. Role Play Pair up to practice responses

Group 1 Question 6: What do the kids learn in this program? Question 10: Are public tax dollars being used to teach kids to shoot guns [weapons]?

Group 2 Question 1: I didn’t know that 4 -H had a shooting sports program. Tell me about it. Question 3: Does 4 -H encourage parents to practice shooting with their children?

Group 3 Question 7: What types of guns [weapons] are used in the program? Question 11: Does 4 -H and [name University] support [name of any specific gun control legislation? ] (e. g. mandatory gun buyback)

Group 4 Question 4: How does teaching children how to shoot guns promote positive youth development? Question 13: Do you think this program could stop [promote] more school shootings?

Some Final Tips 1. Return calls as promptly as possible. 2. Don’t ask to see a story before publication. 3. Don’t berate reporters for a bad story but you can point out factual errors. 4. You can take control of an interview. Don’t just answer questions – steer the reporter toward your messages. 5.
