Lesson 1 Physics 150 215 Describing Motion Basic
Lesson 1: Physics 150 / 215 Describing Motion • Basic Terms & Units of measurement – distance & displacement – speed & velocity – acceleration • Analyzing Motion – diagrams – graphs – equations • Problem Solving
Distance & Displacement • Distance – Total distance traveled – measured in Standard International (SI) units • meters – This is a scalar quantity and is always positive • Displacement – Straight line pointing from start of motion to the ending point – This is a vector quantity
Vector Properties • Vector quantities: 2 properties – magnitude • the size of the vector it is always a positive number – direction • In 2 D or more this involves angles and +/- signs in 1 D this only involves +/- signs.
Angles • Angles and Simple Trig. r • SI units are RADIANS s
Basic Trig. • Trig: c a b
Speed • Speed – Average • total distance traveled divided by total time taken – Instantaneous • rate at which the distance traveled is changing with time in the direction of motion (always +ve)
Velocity & Speed • Velocity & Speed – Average • total displacement divided by total time taken – Instantaneous • rate at which the displacement is changing with time. – Instantaneous speed • magnitude of instantaneous velocity (always +ve) 7
SI units 8
Acceleration • Acceleration – Average • change of velocity divided by time taken for change – Instantaneous • rate at which the velocity is changing with time. – Scalar acceleration • magnitude of instantaneous acceleration (always +ve) 9
SI units 10
