Lesson #1 - Pennsylvania Settlement 1) William Penn and the Quakers • The Quakers were also known as the “Society of Friends” which were founded in the year 1647. • The Society’s rejection of rituals and oaths, its opposition to war, and its simplicity of speech and dress usually attracted hostile attention. 10
