Lesson 1 1 How do you evaluate algebraic
Lesson 1. 1 • How do you evaluate algebraic expressions and powers? – To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute the given value for the variable and then perform the operation. – To evaluate a power, multiply the base by itself the number of times indicated by the exponent.
Lesson 1. 2 • How do you use the order of operations to evaluate an expression – Always evaluate expressions using the following order: evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols, evaluate powers, multiply and divide from left to right, and then add and subtract from left to right. – PEMDAS
Lesson 1. 3 • How do you write an expression to represent a real-world situation? – Translate the verbal phrase in the problem into operations and variables, create a verbal model, and then translate the verbal model into an expression.
Lesson 1. 4 • How do you write equations and inequalities – Use the verbal phrases associated with an equal sign and with each type of inequality symbol to determine whether to write an equation or an inequality.
Lesson 1. 5 • How can you use a problem solving plan to solve a problem? – By the steps in the plan you can identify what you need to know, decide on a strategy to use, carry out the strategy, and then check that the answer you calculate is reasonable.
Lesson 1. 6 • How do you represent functions as tables and as rules? – To create a table for a function, use the domain of the function as the input values and apply the function rule to each input to find its corresponding output. – To write a rule for a function, determine the pattern that links each dependent variable (output y) to its corresponding independent variable(input x)
Lesson 1. 7 • How do you represent functions as graphs? – You can graph a function by using its domain and function rule to create an input-output table, and then by graphing points for each ordered pair in the table.
