Causes of Great Depression 1. Recession of 1929 caused by a fall in spending - Recession – a significant decline in economic activity - Fall in demand for durable goods = expensive and last; Example: House, Car - Businesses cut back production = workers lose jobs = no $ = no spending

Causes of Great Depression 2. Stock Market Crash of October 24 th 1929 - Corporations sold and people invested in stocks (having a share in the company) - During the 1920 s stocks were profitable because businesses were growing - With the Recession stocks began to loose value as a result there was a rush to sell stocks

Causes of Great Depression 3. Chaos in the banking system - banks tried to collect on loans made to stockmarket inventors but their stocks had little to no value - when word spread that banks could not collect depositors rushed to withdrawal their savings

The New Deal • Program designed to alleviate the problems of the Great Depression • Focused on three general goals: 1. relief for the needy: immediate assistance to help w/ necessities of life 2. economic recovery: policy/program to promote growth 3. financial reform: policy/program designed to make sure G. D. doesn’t happen again
