LENT Week 1 FRIDAY MORNING PRAYER Together: Growing, Caring, Sharing in God’s Love

Hear our voice, O Lord, according to your faithful love, All according to your judgement, give us life.

Blessed are you, God of compassion and mercy: All to you be praise and glory for ever.

In the darkness of our sin, your light breaks forth the dawn: All and your healing springs up for deliverance.

As we rejoice in the gift of your saving help, All sustain us with your bountiful Spirit and open our lips to sing your praise.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit: All Blessed be God for ever!

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

All As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen.

PSALM Psalm 69 part 1 (Good News Translation)

Save me, O God! The water is up to my neck; 2 I am sinking in deep mud, and there is no solid ground; I am out in deep water, and the waves are about to drown me.

3 I am worn out from calling for help, and my throat is aching. I have strained my eyes, looking for your help.

4 Those who hate me for no reason are more numerous than the hairs of my head. My enemies tell lies against me; they are strong and want to kill me. They made me give back things I did not steal.

5 My sins, O God, are not hidden from you; you know how foolish I have been. 6 Don't let me bring shame on those who trust in you, Sovereign LORD Almighty! Don't let me bring disgrace to those who worship you, O God of Israel!

7 It is for your sake that I have been insulted and that I am covered with shame. 8 I am like a stranger to my relatives, like a foreigner to my family.

9 My devotion to your Temple burns in me like a fire; the insults which are hurled at you fall on me. 10 I humble myself by fasting, and people insult me.

11 I dress myself in clothes of mourning, and they laugh at me. 12 They talk about me in the streets, and drunkards make up songs about me.

13 But as for me, I will pray to you, LORD; answer me, God, at a time you choose. Answer me because of your great love, because you keep your promise to save.

Glory to the Father, by the Son, in the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen. Or: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

Thirsting on the cross, your Son shared the reproach of the oppressed and carried the sins of all; in him, O God, may the despairing find you, the afflicted gain life and the whole creation know its true king, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

10 “Suppose you can be trusted with something very little. Then you can also be trusted with something very large. But suppose you are not honest with something very little. Then you will also not be honest with something very large. 11 Suppose you have not been worthy of trust in handling worldly wealth. Then who will trust you with true riches? 12 Suppose you have not been worthy of trust in handling someone else’s property. Then who will give you property of your own?

Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love, All because of your great mercy, wipe away my sins. Wash away all my evil and make me clean from my sin, All I have sinned against you and done what you consider evil. Glory to the Father, by the Son, in the Holy Spirit: All Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love, because of your great mercy, wipe away my sins.

All Heavenly Father, your Son battled with the powers of darkness, and grew closer to you in the desert: help us to use these days to grow in wisdom and prayer that we may witness to your saving love in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Trusting in the compassion of God, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us:

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
