Lek Based Tracking Tool Tracking Disturbance Disruptions Reclamation
Lek Based Tracking Tool Tracking Disturbance, Disruptions, Reclamation, and Peak Males
Mapping Tool Overview § The Petroleum Association of Wyoming through the University of Wyoming created an industry funded tool complementary to the Sage -Grouse Executive Order § Not required by the E. O. and supplemental to E. O. § Seeking no exception to any E. O. requirements § Allows tracking of disturbance, disruptions, and reclamation activities on a integrated level across the State § Tool may be one of several methods to track the success of the Core Area Policy 2
Methodology § Lek data from WGFD § Leks locality data not disclosed on mapping § Detail included on mapping: § § Historic lek counts from 1948 onward; Land ownership; Land status (core vs. non-core); Disturbance within a 2 mile radii of lek; § O&G, mining, structures, powerlines, agriculture, burned area, rangeland, pipelines and roads § Disturbance profiles using the same standards currently implemented in the DDCT disturbance data § WRRC reclamation monitoring § No data, pre-monitoring, unsuccessful, natives present, meets rollover, meets SGEO 3
Mapping Product 4
Mapping Tool Phase 1 Objectives Phase 1 a - Map all disturbance within 2 miles of a lek, regardless of current status Phase 1 b – Map and document reclamation efforts § Develop and refine attributes § Discover and consolidate existing digital databases § Digitize from aerial imagery other apparent disturbances § Continue to populate WRRC reclamation database § Develop and refine attributes § Discover and consolidate existing digital databases § Digitize from aerial imagery other apparent reclamation efforts § Using information from reclamation practices to improve future reclamation techniques
Mapping Tool Phase 1 Outputs § PDF maps of every lek showing § Current lek status § Lek Count History § Anthropogenic Features § Reclamation Efforts and Status § Geospatial data § Map outputs are columns § Leks are rows § Create a link between Disturbance and reclamation § Helps tell an important part of the sage-grouse story
Mapping Tool Phase 1 Mapping Possibilities 7
Mapping Tool Phase 2 Objectives § Re-branding – This is not a mitigation tool § Could be used to optimize restoration, reclamation and SGEO compliance efforts § Develop a web viewer to interact with the data and download PDF maps § Continue data stewardship of disturbance and reclamation data § Start to build disturbance history, similar to peak male count § Open to input from SGIT
Mapping Tool Summary § § § § Established a link between reclamation efforts and the disturbance inventory and tracking Complement existing reclamation tracking and builds on existing DDCT database Easily fits within WYGISc’s existing framework Incentivizes industry to reduce its disturbance footprint in Wyoming Creates a simple mapping tool to monitor and track disturbances within two miles of leks on a statewide basis Provides tracking mechanism for reclamation efforts Industry developed approach to monitoring § Industry has fully funded the $102, 000 for completing the first phase § Industry has agreed to help fund phase two § Need partnerships with additional private organizations, State and Federal agencies to continue this program 9
