Go Green While You Spring Clean During the time of year when we begin thinking about yards, gardens – and spring cleaning; we need to be aware that many cleaning products are hazardous to the environment when flushed or thrown away. Green cleaning products can be made at home, for example: According to the EPA, • fumes from household cleansers and other products make indoor air in • the typical home 2 – 5 x more polluted than the air outside! Baking soda can be used as a gentle non-abrasive cleanser for kitchen counter tops, sinks, bathtubs, ovens, and fiberglass. White vinegar can remove stains from the coffee pots, and is a good fabric softener. • Unscented soap will clean just about anything. Avoid using soaps which contain petroleum distillates. • Lemon is effective against most household bacteria. • Cornstarch can be used to clean windows, polish furniture, and shampoo carpets and rugs. www. thinkgreen. com

Energy-Efficient Appliance Rebates With just the appliances replaced during 2010, our community will use an estimated 1, 352, 374 k. Lehi Library Solar Electric System Facts: Using Solar (Photovoltaic) Systems The solar electric system on the roof of the Lehi Library provides sufficient energy production to fully power an average singlefamily home (7, 500 k. Wh per year). Solar systems of this size save approx. 150 trees per year. www. utsolar. org • The system has 21 - 245 watt solar modules; totaling 5, 145 watts. • The modules will still have 80% of their production capacity at the end of 25 years. • The glass on the front of the modules is non-glare tempered glass similar to windshield glass. • Current solar technology is able to extract approximately 15% of the sun’s power. • The actual output of AC power from the 245 watt solar modules through the inverter is approx. 198 watts, or 81%.
