Lego Origin Ole Kirk Kristiansen first began his adventure creating wooden ducks in a factory he brought in Billund, Denmark in 1916, burning down in 1924 and after a short rebuild period burned down again only a year later. In 1932, Ole turned his focus to creating piggy banks and toy cars and trucks. In 1934 was when Lego was first created. Lego came from the name Legodt which means to play well. In 1949 Ole started producing his own bricks called “automatic binding bricks” which later changed to the current name Lego Bricks.
Is Lego exclusive to one particular audience? Adam Reed Tucker was so successful with his Lego Architecture that he even inspired his own Lego architecture kit line after impressing and working with Paal Smith-Meyer. No Lego isn’t exclusive to one audience it has a multitude of audiences including adults or teens known by their own group name called “AFOL” or “TFOL” which stands for Adult Fan Of Lego. It has even gained an audience from more serious areas such as architecture and film.
Does Lego inspire creativity and freedom? The idea that Lego inspires creativity and freedom comes from the endless possibilities each block produces a study started by Godtfred Kirk Christiansen found that there were 102, 981, 000 possibilities that you could do with 6 blocks Professor of mathematics Soren Eilers then later found that it seemed 6 blocks would create seemingly infinitely more possibilities. Meaning that each brick added after would add millions of more possible combinations. This means that anyone who picks up a box of Lego can create so many possibilities there isn’t a limit really its beyond your imagination which allows people to be creative and free, and when someone creates an amazing model it can be really inspiring to people to try create their own model.
Construction/Visual aspects of Lego has been constructed with a very precise stud and tube system meaning that each block can click into another block so that its easy enough to pull apart but strong enough that it will hold onto the other blocks. The visual aspects come from the target audience originally being children so they made something simple and the colours are primary colours.
Is Lego gender neutral? Yes, Lego was built with boys and girls in mind, they used primary colours because there are not associated with any gender
Legos appeal • Legos first audience was targeted towards kids but ever since its creation has only broadened its audience more and more teenagers and even adults love it. Lego is for everyone, there are group names for these audiences such as “AFOL” and “TFOL” which means adult fan of Lego and Teenager fan of Lego has expanded by creating sets such as the Technic sets and the architecture sets. It has been used to inspire buildings too.
Can Lego educate? • Yes Legos whole purpose was to educate from the primal colours to the idea that you can build anything teaches kids and adults things they can make. It has even been used to help kids with autism to gain social skills as they can build projects in a team using Lego.
Lego’s use of weapons and relation to film and games. • Firstly Lego doesn’t use weapons that aren’t swords or olden styled guns. This is because they don’t want to promote violence as its not suitable for young audiences. The only time Lego uses guns in when creating Lego replicas from films such as star wars. Which is why when it comes to films and games there are many Lego fan made films that inspired Lego to make their own film. Lego also took already made films such as Star wards and Batman and turned them into their own Lego games that people can play which is crazy.
Mini figures • Mini figures are a iconic part of the Lego industry they have been apart of Lego for as long as Lego has existed the key things that all mini figures share is the colour which is yellow this is good because it represents that Lego characters have no race and anyone can play with Lego. They also rarely change the shape of the characters when representing other characters from games and films, there a few exceptions.
2004 Lego • In 2004 Lego had a really hard year in sales and the company was going to end up on its face so they had to make a move to stop this happening. What they concluded was that they were making to many kits and not enough Lego pieces, meaning that people were not happy that Lego was no longer the company that said build anything but now a company that give you a kit to build a specific thing. So they listened to their audience and put out more pieces.
Legos future and its impact on me • So the future of Lego seems undecided they are pushing to make Lego have as many uses as possible including building designs and involvement in space operations. • As for its impact on me I would say I enjoyed playing with Lego when I was younger I spent a lot of time building up cars or spaceships and smashing them together to see which one was stronger.
