FACEBOOK/SOCIAL MEDIA The analysis: The video “Using Facebook to Teach” was about a schoolteacher, Sara Romeyn, utilizing Facebook as a teaching tool in her AP U. S History classroom. Every year, Sara organizes a research project; however, instead of conducting a traditional assignment, Sara decided to go the more modern route and incorporate technology. students were to pick a person in history, create a fan page on Facebook, and “take on the identity of the person. ” My Philosophy: After reading this article, my outlook on using social media in the classroom changed. Although I think social media should be utilized, I think it needs to be limited and monitored correctly. Workshops should take place in order to assure teachers know the “ins and outs” of the technology being used. Prevention and Moving Forward: Prevention: This was not a situation where anything needed or should’ve been prevented. I believe the teacher was creative in connecting modern day technology into the classroom curriculum. Moving Forward: I think the teacher should have shared this assignment with her colleagues and her principal. After watching this video, it was clear that in addition to the students enjoying the assignment, they were also learning during the course as well.
EMAILING/TEXTING The analysis: The article “Teachers Texting Students: Should Schools Ban or Encourage? ” spoke on the pros and cons on teachers communicating with their students through texting. Considering there were numerous cases where teachers began taking advantage of having their students’ numbers, policymakers and administrators are working on banning teachers and students from having each others’ numbers. My philosophy: I believe communication between teachers and students need to be strictly limited and professional. Anything can happen and if a line is crossed, I believe the school’s administrators should take matters into their own hands. Prevention and Moving Forward Prevention: The school could have created policies where teachers and students do not share personal information such as: phone numbers and social media profiles. Moving Forward: I think schools should find websites such as Blackboard; therefore, students and professors can communicate about schoolwork on a professional level. If a teacher wishes to consult their student or vice versa, they will be able to contact them through email or websites like Blackboard.
PLAGIARISM/COPYRIGHT ISSUES The analysis: The article “School Cheating Scandal Tests a Town's Values” is about a plagiarism scandal that occurred in Kansas City. Students received a zero and were facing failing the semester once it was brought to administrators attention that they stole sections off of the internet for a botany project. The community gathered together as they debated on what was right and wrong regarding the school’s actions. My Philosophy: I feel as if teachers and administrators fail to stress the seriousness of plagiarism. With this being said, I believe schools need continuously remind students of the consequences following plagiarism. Prevention and Moving Forward Prevention: I believe parents should have conversations about the consequences their children will face if they are caught plagiarizing. The teachers should also re-enforce the school policy before every assignment is given. Moving Forward: I believe this could have been prevented if the school would have had adamant proof that the students plagiarized. Moving forward, I think the school should begin using websites that detect plagiarism in students’ work.
CYBERBULLYING The analysis: A 16 -year old high school student, Amanda Todd, committed suicide after she was continuously bullied in school and online. Amanda was blackmailed by a man she met on an online chat room. He released provocative pictures that Amanda sent to him and they went viral. After the pictures surfaced, Amanda began to be bullied by her schoolmates. After transferring from 2 different schools and the bullying continued; Amanda chose to take her own life. My Philosophy: I believe the main way cyberbullying can be prevented is through communication. I also think parents should hold their children accountable and take responsibility for their children’s actions. Prevention and Moving Forward: Prevention: The school could have trained teachers and staff on cyberbullying protocol. Reading Amanda’s story, it is clear she had symptoms of depression. If the staff had knowledge on depression signs, they could have jumped in and stopped things from getting worse. Moving Forward: Cyberbullying workshops should be made available to all staff, students, and parents. Teachers and counselors should try to build relationships with students.
