LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES ASSIGNMENT Gentry Harris
Facebook/Social Media ■ Recently, in early 2017 Facebook experienced an abundance of high profile crimes posts. Some posts included live shootouts with police, sexual assaults, and even executions. Many illegal actions were posted live stream via Facebook. To fix this problem Facebook hired 3, 000 new content monitors. (Today. com) ■ This happened because there is no filter on graphic content on live stream videos. This could have been avoided if Facebook had a video monitor or something to censor illegal material. ■ From this point on Parents and Teachers need to pay more attention to what their students view or have access to on social media
Emailing and Texting ■ In early 2017, Gmail users experienced an unusually high amount of identity phishing emails. The phishers sought to gain access to email histories and spread themselves into contacts. Hackers used Google symbols to persuade victims to open a fake Google Document asking for user permissions, then gaining the power to manage people’s email accounts. (NBCnews. com) ■ This happened because Gmail’s cyber system apparently had a crack in it and hackers were able to get through. There really was no way for google to avoid the incident because in their minds, the system was air-tight and was unable to be hacked. ■ However, now that the incident HAS happened, teachers and parents should raise awareness of email phishing with possible detection methods and practices
Plagiarism and Copyright Issues ■ One incident involving plagiarism is a speech given by Melania Trump in 2016. Melania Trumps speech very closely resembles a speech Michelle Obama gave early in her husband’s presidency. When compared side by side, Melania’s speech was the same as Michelle Obama’s speech with the exception of a few words. (USAtoday. com) ■ This happened because Michelle’s speech was recorded and was available for reference, which Melania took advantage of. ■ From this situation, teachers and parents should teach their students that cheating is never the way to go. Somebody will always notice when you plagiarize. Students need to be taught that plagiarism is illegal and not tolerated.
Cyberbullying ■ One case study involves a girl named Taylor Hillridge. For her birthday her mother gave her a computer and Taylor went on social media. When her brother hacked her account and posted something inappropriate, Taylor’s friends isolated her and she began experiencing cyberbullying as well as bullying in school. When she couldn’t take it anymore, Taylor posted a video online saying “goodbye” and then committed suicide. There was a movie made based on Taylor’s story called Cyberbully starring Emily Osment. ■ The situation could have been avoided if schools and states have already had cyberbullying laws in place. For some reason, an incident has to happen before rules are implemented, but if the rules were in effect earlier, there would definitely be less occasions when cyberbullying would occur ■ From this point on, school sanctions have been placed for cyberbullying on campus in 45 states but only 14 states involve off-campus infractions (Teen.
