Definition of Work work includes all form of productive activity regardless of whether they are reimbursed (Jacobs 1991). These human occupations - students, home makers, volunteers constitute work regard less of whether they are reimbursed. work is not limited to adults but is relevant throughout the life span and can be applied to a broad range of people from school age children with physical and emotional disabilities to adults in rehab facilities to people with industrial injuries in a work evaluation centre to disfranchise older adults.
Classification of work We can categorize work by two methods On the basis on material handling capacity On the basis of skills involved
On the basis of material handling and physical activities associated with work Sedentary light Light medium Medium heavy Heavy Very heavy Note: See the last slide for classification criteria
On the basis of skills involved Unskilled: Unskilled work is work which needs little or no judgment to do simple duties that can be learned on the job in a short period of time Semiskilled: Semiskilled work is work which needs some skills but does not require doing the more complex work duties. Skilled: Skilled work requires qualifications in which a person uses judgment to determine the machine and manual operations to be performed in order to obtain the proper form, quality, or quantity of material to be produced
Classification of work related activities Prevocational Activities Vocational Activities Activities Related work conditioning Activities related to work hardening Note: We can use these all activities for the purpose of assessment as well as for the intervention
Prevocational training A rehabilitation program designed to prepare a patient for the performance of useful paid work in a sheltered setting or community. It may involve training in basic work skills and counseling as required for a typical employment setting. Activities: Activities are like, candle making, envelop making, cleaning work, paper craft, toy making etc.
Vocational Training training for a specific vocation in industry or agriculture or trade. Activities: can be related to specific job trades and designed for the clients who never experienced work, e. g. , gardening, peon work at office, activities simulating computer work at office, activities related with the work of fitter etc.
Work conditioning activities intensive, program work-related, goal-oriented conditioning . It is designed to restore physical capacity and function to enable the patient/client to return to work Designed specifically to restore systemic neuromusculoskeletal functions, motor function, and cardiovascular/pulmonary functions Activities: Activities are jogging, walking, working on treadmill or stepper, weight lifting activities etc.
Work hardening program A highly structured, goal-oriented, individualized intervention program Designed to return the patient/client to specific work It uses real or simulated work activities designed to restore physical, behavioral, and vocational functions Designed for the clients who already experienced work Activities: Activities are related to specific job trades e. g. carpentry, welding work, office work, computer work, work related to operating the different machines at factory etc.
