Biography Lech Walesa was born on September 29, 1943 in Popowo, Poland. After graduating from vocational school, he worked as a car mechanic at a machine center from 1961 to 1965. He served in the army for two years, rose to the rank of corporal, and in 1967 was employed in the Gdansk shipyards as an electrician. In 1969 he married Danuta Golos and they have eight children. Lexh Walesa is a retired Polish politician and labour activist. He co-founded and headed Solidarity (Solidarność), the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995. Walesa worthily represented Poland as the first president chosen in democratic elections. He was granted the award "Knight of Freedom" for his contribution to the democratic transition of Poland.
Solidarity Movement Lech Walesa is a politician, who in difficult communistic times fought for freedom, justice, and democracy. In 1970 he joined the Strike Committee of the Gdansk Shipyard. Lech Walesa was also active in the Free Trade Unions of the Coast and one of the founders of “Solidarity”. In 1971, he was among those who negotiated workers' demands with First Secretary of the Communist Party Edward Gierek. In February 1976, Walesa was elected delegate to the shipyard Works' Council meeting where he spoke out against the authorities. Dismissed from his job at the shipyard, he found work in May 1976 at a construction machinery enterprise. In 1981, he was officially appointed its chairman. In 1983 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On 22 nd December in 1990, he was elected the first president of the Republic of Poland since the fall of communism.
