Legend „Lech, Czech and Rus” Lech appears for the first time in the legend of „Lech, Czech and Rus”, which was written in the Wielkopolska Chronicle, written in Latin in the second half of the 13 th century.
Long time ago, maybe a thousand years ago, three brothers, Lech, Czech and Rus, went to three parts of the world to found themselves new countries. Lech went north. He walked for a long time through the great, impenetrable forests that covered our land at that time, he forged through the thickets, he walked through the marshes, guided only by the sun or the course of the waters, until he came out onto the plain on the banks of the Warta River.
Delighted by the beauty of the country, the fertility of the land, lots of fish and forest animals, he decided to stop here and build a castle for himself. When, on Lech's order, trees were cut down in the forest to build a stronghold, a whole nest of white eagles was found. Lech took it as a good omen and took the white eagle as a war sign and called the city he built Gniezno. The white eagle on a red background became the coat of arms of the Polish state.
Czech and Rus went further - Chech to the south (where the Czech Republic was founded), Rus to the east (where he founded the state known as Great Russia).
