About LAU The Lebanese American University is a leading, private higher education institution in Lebanon. It operates under a charter from the board of regents of the University of the State of New York and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
History LAU was founded in 1924 as the American Junior College for Women. In 1950, the American Junior College for Women became a four-year senior college with the name of Beirut College for Women. In 1974 it became co-educational with a new name Beirut University College, which was changed in 1996 to the Lebanese American University. .

International and Exchange Students LAU is currently carrying out a commitment to engage in international student exchange/study abroad programs. Our university caters for the needs of incoming international students wishing to enrich their educational experience in Lebanon. We have 1535 Arab and international students enrolled at LAU coming from 76 different countries such as United States, South Africa, Denmark, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Canada and France.
Student Life LAU has a mission to integrate civic engagement with the extra-curricular activities of its students and to encourage them to broaden their horizons both within and outside Lebanon. This activity is done by hosting leadership and civic engagement projects that are drawing the enthusiasm and energy of our students.
SINARC provides a language and cultural immersion program that attracts students from around the globe. It is a top choice for scholars of the region looking to gain an in-depth understanding of cultural and social dynamics while improving their language skills. SINARC credits can be transferred to institutions of higher education worldwide. SINARC offers summer, fall and spring courses at the Beirut campus as well as specialized one-on-one packages for the diplomatic corps. It also offers courses at LAU New York.
Libraries LAU’s libraries are well-equipped to meet students’ needs with spacious facilities that include conference rooms, computer centers, group study areas, and open stacks of 548, 816 books in total. The libraries offer individual instruction, orientation, training sessions, and research assistance to help users find the resources they need. Computer facilities include i. Department of Economics The Department of Economics (ECON) offers programs that give students a good grounding in both theoretical and applied economics. The programs aim at preparing graduates to work in the private and public sectors. The department is part of the Adnan Kassar School of Business, AACSB accredited.
Faculty in the Department of Economics The department boasts the largest number of faculty members of professorial rank in Lebanon. Members of the faculty are engaged in research in many areas of economics and have gained local, regional and international recognition. Their main research focus is on the economics of the Middle East. We also have some part time faculty members who work in international organizations such as UNDP and UN-ESCWA who bring important industry experience to the class. The variety in the educational backgrounds and experiences provides our students with a great academic grounding.

Cooperative Program with the University of Chicago The Department of Economics at LAU and the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago have established an exchange program. This agreement will enable Harris students who have successfully completed the one-year Master of Arts in Public Policy to take 18 credits at LAU and get the MA in Applied Economics degree. Students from either school can make use of the other institution’s internship and career placement opportunities, whether or not they are taking part in the exchange program.
MA in Applied Economics The Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Economics provides students with an indepth understanding of economic theory and applied quantitative methods. The program prepares future professionals for jobs as applied economists in the private and public sectors. The program is also designed to be an intermediate step to the Ph. D in Economics or related fields. The program consists of 30 credits with core courses emphasizing advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and quantitative methods. A selection of diverse topics totaling 12 credits constitute the elective component. A research project supervised by a faculty member from the Department of Economics is required as the last remaining course. Students enrolled in the program can benefit from Graduate Assistantships to enhance their educational experiences. In return, a percentage of their tuition fees is waived. The cost of credit is $856.

Popular Destinations in Beirut Corniche Beirut, a 4. 8 km (3 mi) pedestrian promenade that encircles the capital's seafront. The corniche reaches its maximum height above sea level at Raouché.
Popular Destinations in Beirut Hamra Street is one of the main streets of the city of Beirut and one of the main economic, intellectual and diplomatic hubs of Beirut. The street is a large concentration of shopping stores, restaurants, banks, sidewalk cafes, and a booming nightlife. Hamra street is sandwiched between the two top universities in Lebanon, Lebanese American University(LAU) and American University of Beirut (AUB).
Popular Destinations in Beirut Central District The Beirut Central District or Centre Ville is the name given to Beirut’s historical and geographical core, the “vibrant financial, commercial, and administrative hub of the country. ” At the heart of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut Central District (BCD) is an area thousands of years old, traditionally a focus of business, finance, culture and leisure. Beirut Central District hosts the Lebanese Parliament and the Lebanese Government headquarters.
Beirut Nightlife Beirut is well known for its trendy bars and pubs. The city is a great nightlife destination.
