LEB – the LHC Exp beam pipe Upgrade ceterum censeo: the optics inside the detector beam pipe does NOT depend on the quadrupole gradients 1. ) IR 8 Upgrade Situation β β* (IP 1) =10 cm β* (IP 8) = 3 m IP 8
a large variety of beam optics studied & optimised bog_150_0100_3000_3000. madx bog_150_0050_0200 hv_3000. madx bog_150_5500_10000. madx bog_150_0400_0500. madx β*(IP 8) = 3 m standard ATS, round β*(IP 8) = 3 m standard ATS, flat_xy β*(IP 8) = 3 m standard ATS, flat_yx β*(IP 8) = 10 m ATS_injection β*(IP 8) = 50 cm ATS ions each optics has to be „implemented“ into the overall LHC lattice & optics. Main Issue: Search for ideal phase advance over IR 8.
HL-LHC Beam Optics in IR 8 the extreme cases β*(IP 1) = 5 cm / 20 cm β*(IP 8) = 3 m / 3 m β*(IP 1) = 40 cm / 40 cm β*(IP 8) = 50 cm / 50 cm β*(IP 1) = 5. 5 m round β*(IP 8) = 10 m round
HL-LHC Beam Optics in IR 8 the “ATS Standard” in IP 8 β*(IP 1) = 10 cm / 10 cm β*(IP 8) = 3 m / 3 m nota bene: asymmetric left / right but symmetric within s = +/- 20 m
Aperture Calculations IR 8 new LEB bam pipe model implemented (MG) 3 m optics: on_LHCb = 1. 0 on_sep = 1. 0 on_crossing angle=1. 0 . . . for 7 Te. V. . . for Δy=0. 5 mm. . . for Δx’total = 200μrad included, i. e. new matched IP 8
Aperture Calculations IR 8 new LEB bam pipe model implemented (MG) 50 cm optics (ions): on_LHCb = 1. 0 on_sep = 1. 0 on_crossing angle=1. 0 . . . for 7 Te. V. . . for Δy = ± 0. 5 mm. . . for Δx’total = ± 100μrad included, i. e. new matched IP 8 n 1=5. 1 in the triplets ! ?
Aperture Calculations IR 8 new LEB bam pipe model implemented (MG) 50 cm optics (ions): still comfortable situation inside experiment beam pipe, but at (or beyond (? ) the limit for the triplets IP 8
Aperture Calculations IR 8 new LEB bam pipe model implemented (MG) 10 m optics (injection): on_LHCb = 1. 0. . . for 450 Ge. V on_sep = 1. 0. . . for Δy= ± 2 mm on_crossing angle=1. 0. . . for Δx’total = ± 2270μrad included, i. e. new matched IP 8
Optics / Aperture Calculations IR 2 work in progress no complete solution yet. BUT as long as we stick to the LHC Standard β* values there will be no impact from the ATS scheme on the beam pipe aperture Foreseen beam optics for IP 2: β* = 10 m injection β* = 3 m collisions heavy ions to be discussed
