Learning Theories Constructivism, Behaviorism, and Cognitive (information processing)
Learning Theories Constructivism Behaviorism Cognitive (information processing) Focuses on personal experiences which enable the construction of one’s own version of knowledge that is related to the experience. Focuses on the cause and effect process of behavior which can be changed through Positive/ Negative Reinforcement and/or through Punishment. Focuses on internal processes of how one’s mind processes information. This looks at how information is registered, stored and/or lost in one’s memory. The process of learning can be done through project based learning and/or being in a rich environment and exploration. The process can include question/answer activities where feedback such as reinforcement/punishment can take place. The process can include rehearsing, organization, elaboration, images to what one is learning.
Constructivism • Children are given the opportunity to learn through relating what they have done, physically and/or mentally, to what is being taught in the classroom setting.
Constructivism Contd. • In constructivism the students are actively learning about their subject matter through exploration and experimentation. • Constructivism (on-line)
Behaviorism • Children are able to learn through the use of praise and punishment, which may increase the drive to do well in school. The children can also be conditioned into habits through the use of the reinforcement and punishment.
Behaviorism Contd. • Behaviorism works best in situations where the teacher provides immediate reinforcement or punishments. • Behaviorism (online)
Cognitive (information processing) • Children learn and retain information on different levels. • Information can be learned or saved in a child’s memory through skills like rehearsing, elaboration, and/or imagery.
Cognitive Contd. • The diagram shows how one’s mind is used for the retention of information. • Cognitive (on-line)
