What is symbolism? (Review) Symbolism is when authors use a person, a place, an object, or an event to represent something beyond itself. Example: A red light isn’t just a red light, it means stop what you are doing.

Why do authors use symbolism? (Review) Authors use symbolism because it allows people to communicate beyond the limits of language. Symbols share ideas without using words. Remember that symbols can have more than one meaning depending on who is viewing it. For Americans the American flag is a sign of freedom For certain terrorist groups it is a sign of evil and oppression

“Scarlet Ibis” Practice What concrete objects get a lot of attention? ? What could they represent? It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree. The flower garden was stained with rotting brown magnolia petals and ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox. The five o’clocks by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house speaking softly the names of our dead.

Pear Tree-10 and 11 It was a spring afternoon in West Florida. Janie had spent most of the day under a blossoming pear tree in the back-yard. She had been spending every minute that she could steal from her chores under that tree for the last three days. That was to say, ever since the first tiny bloom had opened. It had called her to come and gaze on a mystery. From barren brown stems to glistening leaf-buds; from the leaf-buds to snowy virginity of bloom. It stirred her tremendously. How? Why? It was like a flute song forgotten in another existence and remembered again. What? How? Why? This singing she heard that had nothing to do with her ears. The rose of the world was breathing out smell. It followed her through all her waking moments and caressed her in her sleep. It connected itself with other vaguely felt matters that had struck her outside observation and buried themselves in her flesh. Now they emerged and quested about her consciousness.

How can I recognize symbols in my reading? Look for objects that are brought up repeatedly. For example, in “The Old Demon, ” the river is mentioned many times and seems to represent anger or violence. In “No Guitar Blues, ” what does the $20 represent for Fausto?

How can I recognize symbols in my reading? Look at objects or people that appear at significant turning points in a piece of literature. In “The Scarlet Ibis” there is a storm right before Doodle dies. The storm symbolizes danger, chaos and destruction.

The Gate P 11: “She searched as much of the world as she could from the top of the front steps and then went on down to the front gate and leaned over to gaze up and down the road. Looking, waiting, breathing short with impatience. Waiting for the world to be made. ”

What could the scarlet ibis symbolize? “’It lives in the tropics--South America to Florida.

What could the scarlet ibis symbolize? “’It lives in the tropics--South America to Florida. A storm must have brought it here. ’ Sadly, we all looked back at the bird. A scarlet ibis! How many miles it had traveled to die like this, in our yard, beneath the bleeding tree. ” What does the scarlet ibis seem to symbolize? Is its story similar to anything else in the text?
