� TASK – In pairs, you have 5 minutes to come up with a list of possible reasons. � Draw upon your knowledge of the sociological explanations – which ones might explain the crimes of young people?

� Self-report studies reveal that small % of young people actually commit crimes, of those who do, they are usually minor offences e. g. shoplifting. � Teenagers are under quite close social control, watched over by parents and teachers. So, many have few chances to commit crime. � Police often stereotype young males as criminals – they are more likely to be monitored / arrested. � Inaccurate official crime statistics: typical crimes committed by young people e. g. shoplifting are more likely to be detected, reported to and recorded by the police. Whereas, the crimes of others are less likely to be recorded (e. g. white collar crimes such as tax evasion)
