• Body Systems in the unit: We will be learning how to pump blood and oxygen through the body for our victim. We will need to know some structures (anatomy) of: • Cardiovascular system • Circulatory System
Circulatory Anatomy • 3 different types of blood vessels • Artery: takes blood away from the heart • Vein: brings blood back to the heart • Capillaries: smallest form of blood vessel were gases (oxygen/CO 2) is exchanged

• Overview • During the next few slides you will learn to perform high-quality CPR skills, both as a single rescuer and as a member of a multi-rescuer • Use adult BLS skills for victims who are adolescents (after the onset of puberty) and older
• Which CPR skills you use depends on your training: • Hand-Only CPR: a single rescuer with little training and limited equipment • 30: 2 CPR: a lifeguard who rescues a drowning child or adult in cardiac arrest • Teamwork: EMS who are called to a scene to care for cardiac arrest victim will perform multi-rescuer coordinated CPR • 3 main components of CPR: • Chest compressions • Airway • Breathing

• The first rescuer who arrives at the side of a cardiac arrest victim should quickly perform boxes 1 &2

• Overview: An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a light weight, portable, computerized device that can identify an abnormal heart rhythm that needs a shock. • Early Defibrillation is key • Having a Public-access defibrillation (PAD) is important • Research has shown that if rescuers minimize the interval between the last compression and shock delivery, the shock is much more likely to be effective • Minimizing this time will require practice and excellent team coordination
• Defibrillation: • An AED analyzes the heart rhythm to identify the presence of a rhythm that responds to shock therapy (a shockable rhythm) • If a shockable rhythm is detected, it will prompt the delivery of an electrical shock to the heart • It temporarily “stuns” the heart and stops the abnormal rhythm so a normal heart rhythm can return • If circulation returns this is called return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)
• Life-threatening Arrhythmias • Arrhythmia is an irregular or abnormal heart beat • They occur when the electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat happen too quickly, too slowly or erratically • Can be life threatening • 2 types of Arrhythmias • Pulseless ventricular tachycardia (p. VT) • Lower chambers of heart contract really fast. IN some cases so fast that no pulse can be found. The body organs, heart, and brain don’t get blood or oxygen • Ventricular fibrillation: (VF) is an arrest rhythm • Heart activity becomes disordered, heart quivers really fast and unsynchronized so no blood is pumped
