Learning Objective: What is stewardship and what does Islam teach about this principle? Write a paragraph describing what you now know about stewardship and Islam Think about the following: - Do Muslims have a duty to care for the environment? - Where do Muslims take there guidance? - Who Muslims look to as an example to follow? Now swap with someone else. Read their paragraph and add bullet points underneath in a different colour pen of anything they have missed Do this with two people
For the following Quranic verses try to identify the environmental issue that it could be linked to
‘’And do not desire corruption in the land. Indeed Allah does not like corruptors’’ – Quran 28: 77
‘’So…let them taste part of the consequences of what they have done that perhaps they will return to righteousness– Quran 30: 41
‘And it is He (Allah) who has made you successors (khala’ifa) upon the earth– Quran 6: 165
‘’And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen’’– Quran 16: 65
‘’And there is no creature on the earth or bird with its wings except that they are communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. ’’– Quran 6: 38
Khalifah Islam teaches that Allah created Adem as the first human to be his khalifah (a vice regent – someone who looks after things for you) All humanity sprung from the same origin, Adem and Eve. Therefore, through our common ancestry we are all khalifahs and must all look after the earth on behalf of Allah Muslims must follow the teachings in the Quran, the laws of the Shari’ah and the example of Muhammad to do this and be part of the Ummah (community) On the Day of Judgment God will question people about how well they cared for the environment as a means of seeing if they can be permitted into Jannah (Paradise or Heaven)
How does being a khalifah relate to stewardship in Islam?
