Topographic/Contour Map A topographic/contour map is a map that shows the elevation in a region (how high or low the land feature is). It shows features such as mountains, hills, lake, depressions or valleys. This type of map is made up of a type of isoline (line that connects points of the same value) called a contour line. Topographic maps add a third dimension to latitude and longitude by showing natural features on the Earth’s surface-in particularelevation.

Isolines An isoline is a line connecting points of equal value.
Examples of Isolines: Isotherms: points of equal temperature Isobar: points of equal barometric (air) pressure Contour: points of equal altitude
Rules for Drawing Isolines: 1. Isolines connect points of equal value. 5 5 10 10 10 15 15
2. Isolines are gentle, curving lines- no sharp corners like you see here. 5 5 10 10 10 15 15
3. Isolines must never simply end- Somewhere usually off the map, the two ends must join to enclose a circular region.
4. Isolines NEVER cross 40 ° 50 ° 30 ° 60 ° X 20° Y Z

Contour lines are drawn at certain intervals. In this example, 10 m. This means we will connect values that are multiples of ten. Highlight data points for values of ten.
Fill in gaps in data that do not have specific values. 60 m would fall somewhere in between these values.

Contour Rules/Symbols Every map has a contour interval. The value represented by each contour line is always a multiple of that interval. Closely spaced lines=steep slope (gradient) Widely spaced=gentle slope (gradient)

A steep (high) gradient changes quickly and the isolines are close together. A gentle (low) gradient changes slowly and the lines are far apart. Steep area Gentle area
A contour line that closes (makes a complete circle) on the map indicates a hill Hatchures represent a depression (a decrease in elevation). First hatchure= same value as previous contour line Each consecutive hatchure= one contour interval lower

Direction of River Flow When crossing a stream, the contour bends upwards towards the stream The bend, or “V”, points upstream. The river flows downstream, OPPOSITE THE APEX (opposite the point of the V)
Highest Possible Elevation: The highest possible elevation of this hill is juts below the value of where the next contour line would be. Since there is no contour line for 40 in this example, the highest possible elevation for the star is 39 m. 30 20 10
Gradient (aka slope) A measure of the steepness. Gradient shows how quickly the value changes from one point to another. Vertical Distance (Change in elevationft. ) /Horizontal Distance (miles) = Gradient (ft/mile)
