Individual mobility for secondary school students • Since 1947 • 12 000 participants per year, from over 100 countries worldwide • AFS Quality Standards going beyond European Quality Charter • Cultural immersion in host family and school • Usually full school year but a growing number of 3 -month programmes 2
European Citizenship Trimester Programme • Initiated in 2006 intra-European exchange • App. 250 participants per year, from / to 25 countries • Intercultural learning with a direct link to active European citizenship • Joint event in Brussels for all the participants at the end of the programme 3
Citizenship Education content • Preparation: reflecting on own identity and community, meaning of active citizenship • During exchange: exploring similarities and differences, engaging with the host community • « Brussels Camp » : - educational workshops on active citizenship - European Parliament as intercultural exercise of democracy • After: engaging in volunteering and active citizenship projects back home 4
Further tools and future outlook • Continuous development of educational materials for trainers and participants • Supporting videos, webinars, manuals, social media activities etc. (ACTIVE project) • Steps towards integrating citizenship education content in all AFS programmes 5
