ANALYTICAL SKILLS AND LEARNING • Basically you will be analyzing yourself! • We can analyze by making use of practical assessments. • 2 Assessments: • Multiple Intelligences Assessment (Howard Gardener) • Meyers-Briggs Type Inventory (Isabel Meyers and Katherine Briggs based on Carl Jung’s work)

INTELLIGENCE “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. ” -Albert Einstein Howard Gardner said, “It is not how smart you are, but how you are smart”.

Multiple Intelligences ØGardner (1998, 2003) contends that intelligence is the ability to solve problems, create products or achieve outcomes that are valued by a culture. ØVarying cultures and eras of history place different values on the 8 intelligences. ØBeing considered intelligent depends on when and in what culture you exist in. ØDepends on what we value as a society. ØSee Sir Ken Robinson: “Do Schools Kill Creativity? ”

Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences holds that there at least 8 distinct intelligences -These are possessed by all people -every person has developed some intelligences more fully than others.

ØThe 8 intelligences are not independent; there are correlations among the abilities. ØLogical-mathematical and spatial intelligences are highly correlated (Sattler, 2001). ØThese intelligences are not mutually exclusive.

• If we are aware of each of our intelligence levels, this can help us to learn new things more easily. • E. g. If my visual/spatial intelligence is highly developed, I will learn new concepts best through visual means. • Let’s have a look at the intelligence types in more detail.

How We Interact with Each other and the World MEYERS-BRIGGS TYPE PERSONALITY INDICATOR • Based on the research of Carl Jung and further developed by Isabel Meyers and Katherine Briggs. • The purpose of this personality inventory is to make theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people's lives. • The essence of theory: seemingly random variations in individual’s behaviors are actually quite orderly and consistent • Differences are due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.

 • An individual’s personality is described in where he/she falls along 4 dichotomies.

EXTROVERSION INTROVERSION “At the end of a long day of school, if you’re slightly tired, and your first desire is to hang out with your friends, then you’re an Extrovert. But if you’d rather have some quiet time alone, you’re an Introvert. ”

SENSING INTUITIVE Sensing involves perceiving what the senses offer—what is—, while i. Ntuition entails seeing in the mind’s eye what could be. I say, “Suppose you’re going to rent an apartment. The apartment manager is showing you around the empty rooms. If you look at what is there and say to yourself, ‘Hmm. Electrical outlets, phone jack, cable jack, AC control, kitchen with microwave, fridge, oven…. ’ and so on, you are a Sensor. But if you look around and say to yourself, ‘The couch would look great here, the lamp would look great there, the painting would look great up here…. , ’ then you are an i. Ntuitive. ”

THINKING FEELING Hypothetical scenario: Suppose you are the coach of the high school girls’ softball team, and you receive word that your team has been invited to the international playoffs in Tokyo. You think, “Great!” Then you check the budget, and you realize that you only have enough money to send half the team. So what do you do? Do you pick out the best players to send to Tokyo, and leave the others behind with hurt feelings? Or do you say nothing about the invitation to anyone, so that no one’s feelings will be hurt? If you fall into the Thinking category, you might well send the best players. If you are in the Feeling category, you might not say anything about the invitation to anyone. The contents of the following support slide are then discussed:

GENDER DIFFERENCE In the thinking/feeling dichotomy ONLY-there is a gender tendency. For men, the ratio of Thinkers to Feelers is 75/25. For women, it is the opposite.

Wherever you live, you can go into any room you want and do what you need to, but there’s probably one room that you gravitate back to, one room where you spend most of your time. In the same way, you can engage in many kinds of behavior, but there’s one set of behaviors that feel most comfortable for you. That is your type.
