LEARNING GOAL I will be able to classify
LEARNING GOAL: I will be able to classify samples as pure or mixtures I will be able to use a model to compare/contrast pure substances and mixtures
All matter can be classified as an element, compound, or mixture CLASSIFICATIO N OF MATTER • Element: made up of one more of the same kind of atom chemically combined • Compound: made up of different kinds of atoms chemically combined • Mixture: contains a variety of elements and compounds that are not chemically combined
Elements and compounds are pure substances PURE SUBSTANCE S Pure substance: made up of one type of particle Pure substances have definite physical and chemical properties Pure substances cannot be created or broken down by physical changes
Mixture: a combination of two or more substances that are combined physically but not chemically MIXTURES Mixtures contain more than one substance Mixtures can be separated by physical changes
CLASSIFYING MIXTURES Heterogenous: a mixture that does not have a uniform composition; two samples from the same mixture will not be the exact same Homogenous: a mixture where the substances are evenly spread throughout; two samples from the same mixture will be the exact same
