Learning for everyone… Aims and objectives Ø The aim of this presentation is to deliver a deeper and wider understanding of how you can contribute to the support the development of children and young people in residential care by understanding and supporting the education system. Ø The objectives of this unit are to enable you to engage with children and young people in learning, support them to sustain that engagement and work with them to maximise their learning. Ø This includes encouraging and supporting children and young people to recognise and build on interests, skills and talents, supporting them to develop attitudes in order to overcome barriers to learning and the importance of engaging family members in their learning.

Learning for everyone… The Legislation – Underpinning Access to Education The legislation underpinning children and young people’s access to education includes: Ø Relevant UK home nation legislation which impacts on policy writing including: Ø The Children Act (1989) Ø The Equality Act (2010) Ø Special educational needs and disability (SEND) code of practice: 0 to 25 years Ø Your own setting’s equal opportunities policies and practice and SEN Code of Practice linked to children’s rights

Learning for everyone… The Influence of National Policies Ø importance of equality of treatment and access and individual needs/rights for development of child in all areas including: Ø physical development Ø Development of communication and intellectual/cognitive development Ø Social, emotional and behavioural development including moral development Ø Negative impact of inequality and lack of emphasis on individual needs such as delayed development and negative behaviour Ø Understand how a child-centred approach improves chances of positive outcomes for children

Learning for everyone… Roles of Key Professionals to Support Development Ø In order to support children and young people to achieve their learning potential, teachers and tutors must understand learning and development and achievement. Ø Professionals must understand assessment. People like Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs) Ø Professionals involved and the system used must cater for assessment, identification and meeting of needs. Ø It and they must allow collaboration with internal and external practitioners and parents and carers to support children and young people.

Learning for everyone… Roles of Key Professionals to Support Development It and they must ensure: Ø Educational psychologists assessment, Ø Implementation of appropriate interventions, such as Ø Therapeutic and behaviour management and learning programmes Ø Collaboration and Communication

Learning for everyone… Alternatives to Formal Education Ø It is extremely important to understand options to formal education as this may not be the correct or most supportive environment for a child. Ø Some alternatives include: Ø Home schooling or flexible schooling Ø private schools, small schools or democratic schools Ø Others include specialist opportunities in Montessori schools or Steiner schools
