Definition of Learning Disability The term “specific learning disability” means a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which disorder may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations. a condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the level expected of those of the same age, especially when not associated with a physical handicap.
What is included with learning disabilities • • • Poor memory ADD/ADHD Dyslexia Speech and/or language problems Processing Issues Convergence Issues
How are learning disabilities diagnosed? Learning disabilities are often identified when a child begins to attend school. Educators may use a process called “response to intervention” (RTI) to help identify children with learning disabilities. Specialized testing is required to make a clear diagnosis, however.
Some intervention practices that produce large outcomes are: Direct instruction Learning strategy instruction Using a sequential, simultaneous structured multi-sensory approach Break learning into small steps Admin probes (shots) Supply regular, quality feedback Use diagrams, graphs, pictures Model instructional practices Provide prompts of strategies to use Engage students in process type questions scaffolding
Important Information There is no medical test, such as a blood test, to diagnose a learning disability. It's also important to note that learning disabilities can often coexist with other neurological disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is not a learning disability (LD), but it’s common in kids with LD. Not all learning and attention issues are learning disabilities. There are interventions, but no medical treatments, for learning disabilities.
