LEARNING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION Mr. Speer’s 2 nd Grade Class
ADDITION • A Sum is the result of an addition problem. • So when you see a number added (+) to another number, the answer is known as the sum. • When it asks you for the sum of one number and another number, it is an addition problem. • Other words for (+) are addition, add, plus, and total. • 3+3=6 Sum
ADDITION BASICS • When it is asked to add one number to another number, draw a picture. • For example, in the problem 2 + 2 you should draw a picture of two apples plus two more apples. You can then count the total amount of apples that you should have. + 2 Apples • 2+2=4 • (Two plus Two equals Four) = 2 Apples 4 Apples
ADDITION PRACTICE • Do these problems on your own and continue to the next slide once you have finished to compare your answers. • 5 + 5 = ___ • 5 + 7 = ___ • 2 + 1 = ___ • 9 + 0 = ___ • 4 + 3 = ___
ADDITION PRACTICE ANSWERS • 5 + 5 = 10 • 5 + 7 = 12 • 2+1=3 • 9+0=9 • 4+3=7
SUBTRACTION • The difference is the answer to a subtraction (-) problem. • 4– 3=1 Difference • If you see a question asking for the difference between two numbers then it is a subtraction problem. • Other words used for subtraction include minus, less, decrease, and take away.
SUBTRACTION BASICS • I want you to do the same thing that you did for addition. Draw yourself a picture so that you can see it in front of you. • Example: 5 – 2 = ___ 5 Apples = 2 Apples 3 Apples • Five apples minus Two apples equals Three apples (5 – 2 = 3) • Imagine that when you see a minus sign, you take away the amount from the starting number.
SUBTRACTION PRACTICE • Do these problems on your own and continue to the next slide once you have finished to compare your answers. • 2 – 2 = __ • 6 – 3 = __ • 8 – 5 = __ • 7 – 1 = __ • 9 – 4 = __
SUBTRACTION PRACTICE ANSWERS • 2– 2=0 • 6– 3=3 • 8– 5=3 • 7– 1=6 • 9– 4=5
