Storm: what Khan Academy knows about its work in schools • Students enjoy learning with Khan Academy • Fun and supportive learning environment • Gamification features (e. g. , points, badges) create an enjoyable learning experience • Teachers value Khan Academy as a resource • Thousands of interactive practice problems, and learning supports for their students • Common Core standards coverage and grade alignment Core question: How can Khan Academy help the most students without adding to a teacher’s work or changing classroom practice in any way?

Learn. Storm A Bay Area pilot A 3 -month learning challenge where students can earn recognition for themselves, their school, and even their city by mastering math skills on Khan Academy. By doing so, students can build a growth mindset that will help them learn anything. KHANACADEMY. ORG
Details on Learn. Storm • Points will be awarded for achievement and hustle, including all types of learners grades 3 -12 • Achievement points–earned for each skill practiced, and every level of mastery earned • Hustle points –earned for working at your learning edge, putting in effort and growing • Leaderboards will show points for individuals, schools and cities, encouraging a team-based spirit • Leaderboards rank individuals, schools and cities on total points AND points per eligible student • Schools can also earn recognition by signing up students and hitting pre-set points thresholds • Fun weekly/monthly challenges will extend beyond traditional Khan Academy exercises and encourage students to test their grit and know-how • An in-person Finals Event with fun prizes will celebrate all participating schools Free and easy to join from anywhere with an internet connection!

Three simple steps to bring the Challenge to your school 1 • Find an opportunity to share the challenge with your teachers, students, and parents • Example opportunities: School Assemblies, Professional Development days, parentteacher conferences, etc. • Go to the Learn. Storm with your parents and students 2 • Encourage teachers to sign-up once registration opens • Go to learnstorm 2015 resources. com/ to find emails, handouts, and simple sign-up details to share with your teachers and students 3 • Identify fun, simple ways to check-in and celebrate participation and success throughout the challenge • Example ways: highlight top students at school assemblies, hang posters in school hallways celebrating school and student progress, etc.
