League of Nations BY RIAN
What is the League of Nations? The League of Nations is an international government organization established after the First World War to maintain peace so there would be no more conflicts. The League of Nations was thought up by US President Woodrow Wilson. The League of Nations did resolved some international conflicts but it failed to prevent the Second World War from happening.
Origins of the Leage of Nations The League of Nations was made when the Treaty of Versailles was negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. When the peace conference met, there was an agreement that the League of Nations should be established to ensure future peace. The work proceeded faster than any territorial or military settlement.
Members of the League of Nations The League was composed of a General Assembly which included representatives from all members states of the countries, a permanent secretariat, and an Executive Council which was restricted to the great powers. The Council consisted of four permanent members which are Great Britain, France, Japan, and Italy and four non permanent members. The Soviet Union joined in 1934 but was expelled in 1939 for invading Finland. There was a total of 63 countries that became member states of the League of Nations.
Failure of the League of Nations Unfortunately, the League of Nations fail to prevent World War II from happening even though it resolved some international conflicts in the past. The League of Nations had several weaknesses that led to its failure: The League was supposed to present the world but many countries never joined the organization including the US. Some members only joined for a while before they leave. Many historians believe if the US joined the League there would be a lot more support. The international relations of member countries conflicted with the League’s requirements for collective security. The League didn’t have its own armed forces and depended on members to act, but none of the member countries were ready for another war and didn’t want to provide military support.
Failure of the League of Nations (continued) Pacifism was a great problem. Disarmament was one of the League’s mission, which deprived countries that were supposed to act with military force when necessary. When countries started to attack others in order to try and expand, the League didn’t have any power to stop them.
