Political/Social Circumstances of his time • Saint-Exupéry was a successful commercial pilot before World War II • He joined the French Air Force during WWII • His father was an insurance broker who died of a stroke before he turned 4 • In December 1935 he crashed his plane in the Sahara desert, rescued after 4 dayshis hallucinations in the desert & brush with death are said to inspire Le Petit Prince • He disappeared over the Mediterranean on his last assigned reconnaissance mission in July 1944, and is believed to have died at that time.

Why is this relevant? • A main character in the book is a pilot

Why is this relevant? • A main character in the book is a pilot who is stranded in the desert. • There is a character inspired by his father- because he died of a stroke when Antoine was so young, Antoine’s view-therefore the main character’s view, of adults is that they are too serious and too busy. • An interesting turn of events is Antoine’s death mimics the death in his book Le Petit Prince.

Le petit prince • Published in 1943 • Fourth most-translated book in the world

Le petit prince • Published in 1943 • Fourth most-translated book in the world • Voted the best book of the 20 th century in France • Translated into more than 250 languages • Story about a pilot stranded in the desert who then meets a young prince fallen to Earth from space • Though it may have been written as a child’s story. The story is philosophical and includes social criticism, it also comments on the strangeness of the adult world from child’s eyes • ". . . an allegory of Saint-Exupéry's own life—his search for childhood certainties and interior peace, his mysticism, his belief in human courage and brotherhood, and his deep love for his wife Consuelo but also an allusion to the tortured nature of their relationship. "

Major work analysis The author uses a child to show the lack of imagination and understanding in adults It highlights the realistic thinking of adults rather and lack of creativity. He also is able to show adults are of a one track mind and cannot be persueded It was written when Antoine was ". . . an expatriate and distraught about what was going on in his country and in the world. “ The story is written like a mirror as the characters take from his own life. The pilot, being himself as well as the boy mirroring his own childhood notions and the rose representing his wife; his love for her as well as the work and energy that love requires.

Major work analysis • The story uses simple language but complex parallels. (The men the Petit prince meets parallel the adult world) • Lots of imagery and symbolism. (The drawings that the pilot makes for the Le Prince) • There is also personification throughout the book. (The Rose and its character as well as what it symbolizes) • Antoine de Saint-Exupéry uses metaphors to teach and voice his opinions.

Conclusion & Personal perspective Le Petit Prince in my eyes can be mirrored to represent the primary lessons. It is able to take lessons we once knew, as children, but have forgotten over time as adults. In primary we learned the basics to the gospel, the foundation. As we learned more and grew, we tended to forget our foundation and see the little steps as meaningless. It was written in a time of world war and chaos, when adults were fighting. I see this story as a plea to the adult world to take a pause and think differently for a change, rather than make war. Le Petit Prince is able to bring adults back to the basics and the foundations of life. The story is written in such a way that all can enjoy it, both adults and children. Like the scriptures, the more you read it, the more you are able to learn and absorb from it.
